College Prowler Take
As is the case at any university and in any city, there are dangerous people, and if students are not careful, they may find themselves in a dangerous situation. However, USC provides a number of services to ensure safety. In addition to Columbia’s police force, the USC Police Department (USCPD) monitor campus 24 hours a day via car, bike, or foot patrols. The 100-plus call boxes strategically located throughout campus allow students fast access to not only the USCPD but also the Columbia and Richland County police departments in emergency circumstances. There are also multiple escort services that operate five nights a week between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m. and an all-night shuttle if students are alone and do not feel comfortable walking across campus. In the event of campus-wide emergencies, a campus-wide text message will go out, and sirens atop of multiple University buildings will alert people of danger. In spite of the tight security on campus, crime still occurs. By practicing simple safety precautions (i.e., not walking alone at night, locking up your dorm room, not leaving anything valuable unattended in public, carrying pepper spray, carrying a cell phone, etc.), students can often avoid these situations. Although the USCPD is very efficient in handling crime, students can take huge steps in ensuring their own safety by following simple common sense procedures.

As a guy, I am not as security...
As a guy, I am not as security conscious as a girl might be, but I have been told by my female friends that they feel very safe here. We have an incredibly low crime rate for a major campus, and they seem to do a really good job in this area. In my three years here, I have yet to meet anyone who has had a negative experience in this respect. |

I generally feel pretty safe on campus. I still like to stay in areas that have at least some light, but there hasn’t been a time when I have felt afraid to walk around on campus alone. |

USC has its own police department that patrols, and there are call-boxes are all around campus. Central campus is pretty safe, but I wouldn’t walk around the outer edges of it by myself. |

USC has a wonderful security...
USC has a wonderful security program. I feel far safer around campus than I do anywhere else in the United States. There are tons of emergency boxes spread across campus that allow anyone to access help from police at any given time. Just like at any college, I recommend you always be on the watch out. But as for USC, any individual can feel assured that USC’s high-quality certified staff is working for the students’ best interest. |

Security is fine, just don’t be...
Security is fine, just don’t be stupid and think you’re invincible just because you’re in college and on your own—stay in groups after dark. Use your intuition and common sense. If something doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t. And there are these call-boxes all around campus that you can call, even if it’s not an emergency. They’ll send an escort over if you ask, even if there’s no emergency. |

Did You Know? There are more than 100 emergency call boxes located on campus, and once one is pushed, an officer is on the scene in 30 seconds to two minutes.
