Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

From the Coyote’s football team to USD’s rugby players, USD athletics are well known for their talent, support, and popularity. Our varsity sports play at the NCAA Division II level, traveling primarily around Nebraska and Minnesota. Participation in varsity sports is mostly scouted, but all the sports welcome walk-ons. Football gets the most participation, by far, with over 100 people trying out each fall. Because of its popularity, football receives the highest attendance numbers, and even has its own fan club, known as Coyote Crazies, who commit themselves to attending each game decked out in red and white. But don’t worry, students are promised seats, even if they are cramped. Plus, they get into games free with a student ID.

Besides football and varsity sports, USD’s club sports and IM sports are definitely growing. Even recent new ones like crew are getting a lot of attention, and most USD students can find a suitable sport to interest them. Hockey and rugby are becoming hot sports on campus and are receiving larger attendance numbers each season. IM softball and football are also oldies but goodies. IM sports bring competition to the table, with trophies and medals for the champions, but the competition is friendly. In fact, a large part of IM sports is having the coolest uniform.

Sports at USD

Varsity sports at USD are very popular, especially football and basketball. The school spirit here is fantastic and many students go to the sporting events, including the away ones, with loud cheering and team spirit!IM's are not as popular here, but there are a few teams and they seem to have fun as well.

Athletics and Wellness Center

I've been enjoying Wellness Center and have been taking multiple cardio and yoga classes. It helped my overall dance performance last year. The center has variety of classes and workout programs starting from 5am until 9pm. I am greatly appreciative having to have such a great and modern facility right across my apartment setting. I am also very appreciative of the community members who teach there and make the environment warm and friendly.

Sporting Events

Student involvement in the sporting events is very poor. Coming from Madison, Wisconsin to Vermillion, South Dakota really is different. Here barely anyone goes to sporting events, they don't have chants or songs they are known for. It could use some work on that aspect. But the dome is amazing I love going to football games there.

School Spirit

School spirit at USD, for the most part, is considered to be high. From Coyote Crazies in the DakotaDome to those students who boast everything the University has to offer, many students are strong supporters of the school. In addition, many professors have come to USD from larger, better-known universities and say they changed schools because they wanted a chance to interact with students and do some research or other activity known to be unique to USD. Of course, you’ll find students that don’t like the campus, but the majority is usually saying good things.

Getting Tickets

Call the Coyote Ticket Office at (605) 677-5959 for tickets. Tickets are easy to get, but some football games do sell out (about one or two per year). Adult tickets run from $10 to $15 per game, and adult passes range from $25 to $110, depending on the sport. Students with ID cards get into regular season games for free and don’t need to call ahead for tickets. Just go to the game and walk toward the student seating section, where your student ID is scanned and you are permitted to enter. But if you are a student and you want to sit in any other section, you’ll need to buy a ticket.
