  • Parking illegally

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

USD Public Safety is active on a normal night, but not necessarily in a bad way. They are always on the lookout for people causing trouble, but they are more concerned with the safety of students than with giving citations or fines. Generally, Public Safety is friendly and only strict when they truly need to be. Most officers realize that students are responsible enough to make their own choices, and they respect students enough to leave them alone unless they are getting out of hand. If you get caught drinking on campus by a USD officer, you will usually be let go and maybe escorted home. The maximum penalty for an alcohol first offense is a $100 fine and alcohol classes. Fines for causing any destruction depend on the degree, and usually, the student will be fined the amount it costs to fix the property.

Besides Public Safety, USD CAs (community advisors) can write students up for breaking any rules in the dorms, like having candles lit, noise and alcohol violations, tampering with fire extinguishers, having unescorted guests, propping open doors leading outside, and placing illegal decorations on the doors. CAs vary from being too strict to too lenient, and you won’t know what kind of CA to expect until you arrive. But if you follow the rules for the most part, or at least play it smart, you should be fine.

Punishment Policies

The campus police are not very strict when it comes to drinking. Officers tend to be more concerned about making sure you make it to your destination safely than punishing students. This does not mean, however, that there is no negative repercussion for bad behavior. There is zero tolerance for driving under the influence or drug use.

Punishments

Parking is a big deal at USD. The school police takes no mercy with parking tickets. You will get a ticket for being parked for 20 seconds. Not a lot of parking options, so tickets are handed out frequently.

Campus Strictness

The campus really doesn't get to involved in the things that it's students do outside of the school hours. But being as Vermillion is a small town, they police force does keep a very strict eye on loud noises, or big groups of people walking from house to house on the weekends. One thing they don't watch too strictly are the Greek houses.
