College Prowler Take
From PDAs being used in the honors program to the ability to scan the Internet on the CSC lawn, USD’s use of computers is top-notch. Students appreciate the numerous computer labs, the largest library in South Dakota, and the wireless connections all over campus. Most students do bring their own computers to school, and each dorm is set up to allow every student their own personal access to the school system. The upside is that it’s easy to get connected and it’s free; the negative is that our Internet Technology Services (ITS) aren’t nearly as superior as the network they provide. With a Web site constantly changing to better attract prospective students and provide more Web-based communication among students and staff, ITS tends to be more concerned with faculty and University requests than student computer problems. But it is fabulous to know that you can register for classes, make payments, and have almost all your student questions answered from the privacy of your home. Using the Internet for school works well; using it to download movies and music isn’t such a great idea. The University has cracked down on students taking up too much space and, in some cases, has kicked students off the University system for a time.

You can print up to 20 pages a day for free. After that, they overcharge. I recommend bringing your own computer and printer to the dorms; that way, you know you always have access. |

There are plenty of computers, just don’t use the ones in Slagle Hall. I liked the McKusick Center because most people don’t realize it exists and there is usually room. |

I really like the fact that most teachers check their e-mail several times a day, and it’s a convenient way to communicate with most of them. They also let you e-mail them assignments and post notes and PowerPoint presentations online. Most of my classes are using WebCT, and I enjoy the group message boards and private class e-mails through the system. Plus, if you join the Honors Program, you get a Palm Pocket PC. I love my Palm. I use it as my agenda book, and it comes in handy, but professors aren’t using it in classes like they are supposed to be doing. |

I feel like the Link Lab is always busy. Sometimes it’s difficult to get on a computer. But, when you figure out a daily schedule, you can find a lab that is usually open during that time. |

USD has very nice, up-to-date computers. The mass communications department has new Macs in both their labs, and the technician is great. |
