Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drugs, especially marijuana, are common in the Midwest. USD is no exception. Substance use and abuse happens on and off campus, and marijuana, opium, and mushrooms are probably the most prominent drug scenes. In recent years, the issue of taking codeine or drinking a bottle of Robitussin has also been on the rise, but it’s nothing so serious that Public Safety has actually cracked down on the use. Actually, one could say getting high is just as easy as getting drunk when you’re under 21—you probably won’t get caught doing either. However, getting caught with alcohol on campus will cost you $100 and some alcohol abuse classes. Getting caught with drugs could get you expelled for one to two semesters. And the truth is, you can’t really label the kind of students who use illegal drugs, because you’ll find them in about every group or organization, from honor students and Greeks to music majors and athletes.

Besides mind-altering drugs, the use of tobacco, caffeine, and Stackers has become popular with a lot of students on campus. Smoking is popular in South Dakota, and the habit is very visible on campus. Actually, smoking has been a heated issue on campus for several years. Non-smokers want a smoke-free campus, and smokers feel that changing the smoking rules would be unfair. Ironically, on the weekends, a lot of the non-smokers can be seen downtown smoking.

Drinking at School

Our campus is a dry-campus, however next year it will not be. I would say there is a lot of drinking at USD and not enough policy enforcement. I am not so sure about the whole drug situation, but I would assume there are drugs because they are everywhere.
