Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Truth is, USD males tend to look forward to the weekends because it’s the time of the week where females are somewhat expected to spend time getting ready to go out and flaunt what they have. Hookups happen often, both on and off campus; however, not all students are concerned about looks, and you’ll find a decent amount of both guys and girls who feel much more comfortable in a T-shirt and jeans than a miniskirt or button-down shirt. Whatever you want to do and whomever you want to meet, you’ll have a chance here at USD.

There are those, especially girls, who do dress up to get noticed. If the girls are looking to get hit on all night or get compliments on their looks, they should dress nicely, put on makeup, and do their hair. For the guys, tight shirts seem to be in at USD, as long as you can pull it off. Either way, dressing up gets some sort of social reward. But you don’t have to dress up in order to be accepted—at least, not by your own gender. Plenty of students go out in University shirts, and sometimes a funny shirt will get more compliments than a tight one. There are a variety of students at USD, and you’re bound to find the crowd that interests you. We judge people more by who they are than by what they wear.

Everyone Fits

USD has a wide variety of students. There are the hipsters, punks, athletes, geeks, Christians, atheists, Greeks, rappers, rockers. EVERYONE has a place here. Plus, people have the Midwest niceness to them. It is a friendly and open place that you will fit right in.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

With a large majority of USD students majoring in political science, business, or mass communications, much of the student body is naturally outgoing and usually willing to interact with any student that shares at least a few similar interests. Like any college, you'll find your social butterflies and your less interactive students, but if you want to go out and interact with a crowd, you'll have no problem finding one. Most social students are in a number of organizations, and the best way to meet a variety of people is to surround yourself with a variety of organizations and opportunities.

Hookups or Relationships?

It's safe to say dating may be dead at USD. Most students prefer initial hookups before real romance, and a good number of students are in serious relationships with people other than USD students. If you're looking for romance, you may find it, but no one is making any promises. The social scene at USD is so interactive and energetic that relationships tend to fail before they even start. But, when you find the right one, everyone will be happy for the two of you, call you married, and forget to invite you to the singles party on Friday night. However, if you're looking to hook up with someone, you'll find a huge social scene willing to invite you out every weekend, where both the ladies and guys are just having some wholesome fun.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

USD students are usually one of two types: the ones that are involved in two or more organizations, or the ones that have little University involvement and spend most of their spare time at their houses or in their dorms with their friends. The type of person you are will depend on where you’ll head to meet people. Those active in organizations are most likely to meet someone they’re interested in within their organizations, or at sponsored events on campus. The other type will most likely find someone at house parties and frat parties or at friends’ houses. There really isn’t a best place to meet the opposite sex; we’re sort of intermingled everywhere.

Dress Code

The dress code at USD is pretty flexible—everyone dresses according to his or her mood, style, and interest in being noticed. We have a variety of dress types, from hippies and skateboarders to young professionals to those who attend class in their pajamas. On the weekend, it's highly expected for most girls to look like they're ready for a night out, but wearing a shirt and jeans will still get you through the door—it just might not get you a date. Guys wear jeans downtown and out to parties. In general, it's not so much about what you're wearing, but the attitude you are sending off that makes people notice you or not notice you.
