Unique Things

I love the wellness center, although students pay a really high fee for using it. I love the zumba classes offered. There are great study abroad opportunities.

The Good Witht He Bad

The School has very unique buildings. The buildings it what originally drew me to the campus. Also, there are a lot of accredited academic programs. The bad thing is that there are few activities on the weekends and a lot of students go home.

Facts

Traditions
  • Dakota Days: By far the biggest event on campus, Dakota Days is USD’s homecoming. It takes place each fall and involves a large number of events that begin on the Monday before the Saturday football game and last until the Sunday after the game. Each year, the Dakota Days committee picks a new theme for the event, and alumni and parents come back for the parade and football game.
  • Dance Marathon: A national event, students involved spend 24 straight hours dancing, playing games, and interacting with children from the Children’s Miracle Network, the organization the event raises money for.
  • Fight Night: Another Greek sponsored event, Fight Night is the TKE frat’s annual fundraiser. The name explains it all. One night each spring, the Tekes set up a wrestling ring and different students fight (but all in good fun) to be the Fight Night winner.
  • Kegs & Eggs: Part of Dakota Days, Kegs & Eggs takes place downtown the Saturday of the homecoming football game when anyone willing to participate heads to the bars at 8 a.m. for food and liquor before the 10 a.m. parade. Different bars have different specials and sell Dakota Days T-shirts.
  • Strollers: A Greek tradition, Strollers is a spring vaudeville show brought on campus each year to attract Greek alumni back on campus and have a little fun. The show is full of jokes and puns on the University and is also a dance competition between a selected number of performing teams.
  • USDefrost: Taking place during the winter, Defrost is a week-long event with a variety of activities that take place with hopes of cheering everyone’s wintry-cold mood away. From the frog jump to a bonfire, Defrost is just one week of the year with a little extra going on.
Urban Legends
  • All the sororities have ghosts in them.
  • Alumni Tom Brokaw was asked to take a year off by Doc Farber because of his lack of seriousness in studies.
  • President Abbott doesn’t give snow days because his daughter got an underage at the bar the last time he did.
  • There’s an underground system of hallways that connects to all the buildings on campus.
  • You don’t have to be 21 to go to the bars downtown.
