Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students are constantly talking about Public Safety’s ticketers (the students that walk around and give parking tickets). Trying to break the parking rules without getting caught is almost impossible, and fighting a ticket once you get it is even worse. All students are allowed to purchase parking permits, which currently cost $78 for a full year, and USD claims they don’t sell more permits than parking spots, but no student really believes that. Parking lots fill up early in the morning and stay full until mid-afternoon, meaning you’ll either drive in circles waiting for a spot to open or get frustrated and go park six blocks from campus. Unfortunately, access to a car is necessary in order to survive in Vermillion, so not worrying about parking is nearly impossible, especially if you plan on heading out of town on the weekends.

Off campus, parking in Vermillion doesn’t necessarily get any better. Many of the streets only allow parking from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., and some aren’t clearly identified, causing the person parking to really have to think about whether or not they can legally park there. The city banned parking overnight on Main Street, and it has received a lot of negative feedback from students who argue that the city is encouraging drunk driving by not allowing students to legally leave cars parked overnight. Because of the complaints, the city has provided some free public parking areas, but there are still concerns.

Terrbile Parking

The parking here at the university is terrible. There is not enough parking, and it not convenient once-so-ever. Freshman are not the only ones who get the bad parking, but it is everyone.

Parking SITUATION

Parking permits are ridiculous. Over $100 and way up from last year. Parking on campus with a permit is okay IF you can find a spot. I'm terrified for next year though. Even if I live half a mile away from campus I'll probably just walk to class before trying to park near campus without a permit.

Parking Is Good Compared to Other Schools

The parking situation is frustrating because they keep raising the parking permit price for no apparent reason. There are also a lot of spots not very close to the buildings you need to go into, but at least there are spots. The situation is very good considered to other schools I've been to, but it's still frustrating to have to walk a mile.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking is arranged and monitored by lettered parking permits. Campus residents receive a B permit; faculty, staff, and off-campus residents receive an A permit; family housing residents have C; and handicapped drivers have H. When entering each lot, a sign is posted showing what letters are allowed to park in the lot. It is easy to figure out where you are allowed to park; however, parking in the lot may be not as easy, since spaces are usually full. You can buy a parking permit at any time through the Business Office located on the second floor in Slagle.
