Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

USD may not be well-known nationally, but the Midwest ranks many of the University’s departments as some of the top ones in the area, and most of the students say they wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else. Students unhappy with USD are usually those that are unhappy with the locale and the expected degree of work. After all, there’s nothing wrong with small-town South Dakota. In fact, when it comes to a friendly atmosphere, USD couldn’t get much better. Whether you’re in class or just hanging out chatting on one of Vermillion’s green lawns, students and faculty on campus are polite, conversational, and generally happy. And with all the tutorial opportunities and student advisors, leaders, and philanthropists, USD students, for the most part, are always willing to meet a new face and began a new friendship.

USD may lack transportation and have students who speak with a Midwestern accent, but there definitely is a huge variety of student interests, considering the school attracts not only city kids and future doctors but also farm-raised tomboys and top ACT rankers. But because of this, USD has adapted to being prepared to deal with classmates that may have everything or nothing in common. It is part of what makes the campus, classes, and community so neat. If you’re looking for the friendliness of a small community, the competition of a top school, and the educational opportunities of a private institution, USD has the ability to offer all three. In addition, while here, you’ll have every chance possible to do some hands-on researching, be part of some amazing organizations, receive some downhome attention, and make friends to last a lifetime.

Transfer

As a transfer it was better than my last school, but definitely below the best in the country. Very good school, too small of a town.

Overall Experience

I have had a lot of great professors last year. I will be coming back as a sophomore so I am very excited to take more classes and get to know my professors and have them teach me great things about writing, reading, researching, acting, performing and more. I am greatly appreciative of the community I am surrounded with. People are simple the best to hang out here; no one seems to have bias against anyone. My favorite things to do here is to work out and do theater, and getting to know people across the U.S.

USD Experience

There needs to be a better variety and times of classes offered. The classes offered are not directed toward transfer students. There is almost always sequences that need to be taken which can put you back a semester or year. Nothing is advertised on campus so off-campus students never know what events are going on. Student life is almost non-existent. The only event students look forward to is Dakota-Days, which almost has nothing to do with campus anymore. A lot of the professors on campus are nice, mostly the non-science professors.
