Some people may find it weird that USD and Vermillion have no transportation services. Others would call it the simple life. USD is a small campus in a small town. Dorms and classes are close together, and the town isn't all that large, either. Because of this, there really isn't a need for any kind of public or private transportation. There are no regular shuttles on campus, and there never have been. Students walk on campus and off. However, on the weekends, the school does offer a free shuttle service around town known as Safe Rides, or the drunk bus. For free, the drunk bus will pick you up and drop you off either at your front door or at one of the marked stops, depending on how busy the service is. It was organized to prevent drunk driving, and it has been a large hit for both those drinking and not drinking on the weekends.
Vermillion doesn't have any airports, bus stations, or trains. In fact, there is no such thing as getting a taxi to the airport, because the closest one is about an hour's drive away in Sioux Falls. No trains run through the area, but honestly, no one really minds. It's not like USD students feel sheltered. It's more like we feel safe being in such a small community that students would rather walk than call a taxi service.
