Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are definitely four seasons at USD—four extreme seasons. When it rains, it pours, when it snows, it piles, and when it’s hot, it’s very hot. The weather does have an effect on students’ and professors’ moods, and you’ll be happy the first time you’re in your last class on Friday and it gets dismissed early because the professor says it’s just too nice to be indoors. Students not used to South Dakota weather should be prepared for wet, mild springs and falls, hot and humid summers with a lot of bugs, and cold winters with several snow storms. You’ll want to bring clothes for every type of weather. The University never closes down because of weather, but some professors will cancel classes when the snowstorms hit. One advantage to winter, however, is the ice-skating and sledding opportunities, and of course, the new USD sport of snow sculpture building.

Most dorms and classrooms are air-conditioned. Be ready to bring a fan, though, since they turn the heating and air conditioning off and on according to a set schedule. Most students bring a box fan to put in the window, but any fan will do. Also, if you stay in the summer, be prepared for heat indexes in the 100s. Vermillion is also known in the summers for thunderstorms and tornadoes, although no huge natural disasters have hit the area for a long time.

Four Seasons

The University of South Dakota is in the midwest, so all four seasons show up. There is a lot of snow in the winter, and it gets fairly warm. The sidewalks are usually shoveled off, so getting to class isn't too bad. However, if you want to drive, you have to know how to drive in the snow because the roads don't get plowed very often.

A Little Bit of Everything

Here in South Dakota, we are bombarded with the wonderful weather transitions. Since the campus is fairly small, its not a huge deal walking but it gets pretty old. In the winter it is very cold because it snows alot, there is about a .1% chance out of 10% that classes will get canceled. However, when the weather gets warmer, people are usually outside running around and playing games.
