College Prowler Take

Students are steadily becoming more involved with athletics at USF. Several of the Bulls’ football games were broadcast on ESPN in Fall 2003, and as of 2005, USF belongs to the Big East Conference. While these are awesome feats for the athletic department and for USF, the students have yet to fully catch on to the hype surrounding USF football. Although varsity sports have become more popular with students in recent years, game turnouts are not nearly as large as they should be. However, fan support seems to be rising, along with the teams’ winning percentages. Each year, more and more students have come out to show their support for the Bulls. Not all varsity sports are recognized as they should be, but these sporting events are increasing in popularity and will probably continue to do so as long as USF continues to recruit talented athletes.

Many students become involved in intramural sports during the semester. Soccer, softball, and flag football are popular with many organized student groups. Club sports at USF are highly overlooked; still, the men’s and the women’s rugby teams and the USF ultimate Frisbee team are popular around campus and actively recruit players throughout the year. Many students aren’t aware of the facilities at Riverfront Park, which means that the Frisbee golf course is almost always empty, and canoes and kayaks are almost always available to rent. Just be careful what you feed the fish.

Varsity sports have gotten progressively better since I came here two years ago. Many of our student athletes are starting to turn pro. If only they’d remember me after their endorsement deals. Some famous sports alumni that have come out of here include Tony LaRussa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Terry Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, yet I don’t think he graduated.

I swear, at times it seems like IMs are bigger than the varsity sports!

I think freshman year, especially when you live on campus, it’s easier and more fun to become involved with intramural sports because you have to get a team together. A lot of the sororities and fraternities have their own teams. Overall, the biggest varsity sport is football and that’s because the games are really fun. It seems like no one really shows up to the baseball games, or anything.

Varsity sports are not really that big on campus, but they are growing. IM sports and club sports are very big.

Varsity sports are very big on campus, especially basketball and football. They’re not as big as other school’s sports, but it’s getting better each year. IM sports are very big, and there’s a big turnout for most games. Greeks participate in most sports, as well.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Argos Center - Argos Center has a small fitness facility with an aerobics room and weight machines. This fitness center is designed specifically for USF students living on campus.
  • Campus Recreation Center - The Rec Center is 6,500 square feet and has a gigantic weight room with dozens of machines that are free for student use. The center also has a martial arts room, racquetball courts, volleyball courts, and basketball courts for student use. The Rec Center is large and impressive, and it is an ideal facility for those students who frequent the campus.
  • Intercollegiate Athletics Facility (IAF) - Completed in the spring of 2004, this facility hosts locker rooms, athletic department offices, athletic team offices, meeting rooms, weight training rooms, academic classrooms, as well as sports medicine classrooms.
  • The Outdoor Recreation Center at Riverfront Park - Riverfront Park is a place for students to go when they feel they need to get away from the stress of college life. The park has a disc golf course, shuttles, and canoe and kayak rentals for students and alumni. Moonlight canoeing is one of the most romantic events at the park.

Getting Tickets

Admission is free to all athletic games for USF students. For those who are not USF students, tickets are generally cheap and easy to obtain.

Most Popular Sports

Football is huge at USF, largely because there is no other college in the Tampa Bay area that has a football team. Basketball is also a popular sport, although the turnout for basketball games isn’t nearly as huge as it is for the football team. The men’s and women’s rugby teams are increasing in popularity, but it’s rumored that most of the sport’s spectators have never actually watched a rugby game in their entire lives.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s golf team has done well in recent years, but the team’s achievements have been overlooked by the USF student body, a group that is impressed with more fast-paced sports. Also, no matter the women’s basketball team’s performance, they are overshadowed by the men’s sports teams.
