Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students are steadily becoming more involved with athletics at USF. Although varsity sports have become more popular with students in recent years, game turnouts are not nearly as large as they should be. However, fan support seems to be rising, along with the teams’ winning percentages. Each year, more and more students have come out to show their support for the Bulls. Not all varsity sports are recognized as they should be, but these sporting events are increasing in popularity and will probably continue to do so as long as USF continues to recruit talented athletes.

Many students become involved in intramural sports during the semester. Soccer, softball, and flag football are popular with many organized student groups including the fraternities and sororities. Club sports at USF are highly overlooked; still, the men’s and the women’s rugby teams and the USF ultimate Frisbee team are popular around campus and actively recruit players throughout the year. Both tennis teams have been doing quite well in recent years. Many students aren’t aware of the facilities at Riverfront Park, which means that the Frisbee golf course is almost always empty, and canoes and kayaks are almost always available to rent. Football games are always great to go to, and you can pretty much always get tickets.

Let's Go Bulls!

The students at the University of South Florida are extremely supportive of the teams at their school. You see them all on game day; stomachs painted green and gold and their helmets with horns on top as they scream in spirit. Students all over campus, at any given time, thrust their hands in the air and yell go Bulls! It is truly a proud moment when the players run on to the field or court for a game and pupils and staff alike can't help but shout with respect. In fact, one of the first things I learned at the school was how to make the Bulls symbol with my hand!

Ok Athletics

University of South Florida, while it does have accredible teams, I would say more so focuses on it's academics and Research than athletics. The athletic facilities are really nice and modern, but everyone knows that the academics is really paying for them.

Most Popular Sports

Football is huge at USF, largely because there is no other college in the Tampa Bay area that has a football team. Basketball is also a popular sport, although the turnout for basketball games isn’t nearly as huge as it is for the football team. Other sports are beginning to pick up in popularity, though.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s golf team has done well in recent years, but the team’s achievements have been overlooked by the USF student body, a group that is impressed with more fast-paced sports. Also, no matter the women’s basketball team’s performance, they are overshadowed by the men’s sports teams.

School Spirit

In every crowd, expect to find plenty of students wearing green and gold, and showing support for their school. The school’s athletic department has grown in recent years, pushing a rise in school spirit at the University. Because the Bulls are Tampa’s only college football team, Tampa residents are strong supporters of the school’s sports teams. Homecoming keeps getting bigger, and if these larger turnouts are any indication of what the future holds, USF is sure to become one of the most followed college football teams in the country.

Getting Tickets

Admission is free to all athletic games for USF students. All you have to do is request one from the students' online account. There is a lottery for a ticket, but it rarely matters for actually getting tickets. The more sports events a student goes to, the more points he or she earns toward the lottery setup. For those who are not USF students, tickets are generally cheap and easy to obtain, either online or at the events.
