Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If students are willing to invest the time and money that it takes to go Greek, then joining a fraternity or a sorority can be a great option for making friends on campus. Students should know that the Greek lifestyle is both overwhelming and time-consuming. Students must attend various social events throughout the year, participate in community events, and pay dues regularly. It can be a huge time investment, but most fraternity and sorority members would argue that it is well worth it to rush.

Greeks are known for their wild parties where alcohol flows like the mighty Mississippi. While students need not be Greek to host a great social event, the school’s fraternities and sororities have traditions of brotherhood and sisterhood that can make non-Greeks, or GDIs (God Damn Independents), feel out of place (or out altogether) at parties where Greeks are present. Many Greek students will tell of wild parties where men and women who were strangers at the beginning of the night had paired off by the end of the night to engage in sexual activities. While this is certainly not true for all Greek organizations at USF, students should be aware that this can sometimes happen when people are under the influence of alcohol. Some students say that going Greek is worth it, but many students will find that their participation in other activities around campus is cheaper and more rewarding. The Greek community does not infringe on the non-Greeks in any way.

Greek Life - Good Experience but Not Necessary

Greek life is really diverse at USF. There is a fraternity or sorority for just about anything including socializing, leadership, service, or culture. Greeks have their own housing called "Greek Village" available but it is not mandatory. Although Greek students tend to be found in leadership positions in a lot of organizations like Student Government, it's not really a big deal if you join a fraternity or sorority. It can augment your university experience but it isn't necessary in order to have a great experience at USF.

Greek Life

There is a greek village dorms for those who participate. It doesn't effect non-greeks in a negative manner. There is no pressure to be a part of the greek life. It is a fun enjoyable part of the campus experience at USF.
