Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students on campus don’t realize what the public transportation is like around Tampa because they have never been forced to use it. While the shuttles are good for traveling to and from the University Mall, most of the other public transportation in Tampa is not very good. There are no shuttles from USF to the airport, and taxis are expensive for those who are intent on leaving the University. The buses are in poor condition, and the schedules are very erratic. The HARTline takes more than an hour to transport people to places that they could get to in 15 minutes by car. However, USF just installed GPS devices on all buses, and students can now get real-time location info on the buses at the Bull Tracker (http://www.usfbullrunner.com/).

A car is the best mode of transportation in the Tampa Bay area, but students who can’t afford one are sure to have plenty of friends who can drive them to the places they need to go. There are sidewalks all around the campus, so students who desperately need to get to the grocery store or the pub always have the option to walk or take the area buses that will take students for free with their ID. Many students also choose to bring their bicycles to USF, which is an excellent idea, but it can get very crazy trying to maneuver through some crowds during peak hours of the day. Many students also cruise around campus on their skateboards, their longboards, and their inline skates, but these can prove to be a hassle when trying to carry books and skate at the same time.

The Bull Runners are great around campus and the very close and local apartments, but besides that, students either have to bike or walk or drive to campus.

Great Buses, Bad Parking

I live very close to campus, so I hop on the BullRunner to get to class (there are six bus routes that the school provides to take students around campus. These buses get me fairly close to my class and come every 20 minutes so I am never late.

I do not have a vehicle, but I always hear people complaining about having to pay for a parking pass while the parking spots are so limited. This makes students late for class unless they leave extremely early.

All you need is your USF ID card to get around campus. There are some off-campus destinations including the mall and Walmart. Tampa has a HART bus transportation system but Tampa isn't a very big city (i moved here from Atlanta) so the bus system isn't that good. The campus bus system runs from early in the morning until midnight on weekdays except friday when they stop running at 5:30 (for some reason). On saturday and sunday they're from 2:30-9:00. Overall, you'll probably want to leave campus to you should at least know someone with a car.
