24-Hour Labs?

Yes - Leavey Library, Henry Salvatori Computer Science Center (Monday–Thursday)

College Prowler Take

Computer labs are very accessible and located all over campus. USC consistently gets the newest and fastest computers on the market, and each year, there is always something new to the computer scene. The labs at Leavey Library are always packed in the weeks leading up to midterms and finals, but the lab in King Hall is usually more accessible at peak times. The computer labs are good if you wish to print high-resolution or very large documents and want to save ink and money for your own printer.

However, computer labs come second when compared to your own laptop. It is strongly suggested you bring your own laptop because not only can you use it for taking notes, but you can stay connected through the USC Wireless Network, which is available everywhere on campus, albeit a bit slow in certain places. Each dorm room comes with an Ethernet jack, so you will never be without access to the Internet at any point on campus. Plus, bringing your own laptop will allow you to get just as much work done as if you were in a computer lab. Put simply, you will only benefit from bringing your own laptop to school with you.

The Language Center has really nice computers, but you need to be taking a foreign language class to get priority if it’s crowded. There are three other computer labs that all have PCs, Macs, and SUNs with floppy or zip drives. You can print, but you have to use the electronic money on your USCard to pay for it.

The computer network is good. All University housing has Ethernet ports for every roommate, and Greek housing has wireless DSL hubs in the houses. Thcomputer labs are not always crowded unless you go to Leavey Library; then it’s impossible to get a computer.

Bring a computer. I highly recommend it, although I work in the computer lab a lot even though I have my own computer. We have a lot of nice labs on campus. The worst one is in the main library, but even that is nice. Sometimes you have to wait, but I have never had a huge problem. There are many 24-hour labs on campus. You can print, scan, use the Internet, and do all sorts of things.

Computer labs in SAL and Leavey Library are usually crowded. Kings Hall and WPH are usually not.

The computer network is fast. If you can afford it, bring you own computer. Laptop or desktop, it’s your choice. Laptops can get stolen, but it’s really nice to bring one to the library because it’s harder to study in the dorms. Just get a lock and be smart; don’t leave it anywhere. If you have a laptop, you can go to empty classrooms to work. Plus, there are study lounges in the dorms. You can get by without a computer, but it’s more convenient to get one.
