Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The drug scene is considerably tame for a wealthy school in the middle of a city that is famous for partying. Drinking is a daily custom in most fraternity houses at USC, especially when girls are around. On campus, drinking is prevalent but more discrete. Although more conservative social circles claim to be opposed to smoking and abusing heavier drugs, students are not blind to the fact that people get drunk and stoned at parties.

Basically, the wildest party-goers, mostly affluent Greek students, seek out cocaine and usually find it if they are willing to spend big bucks. For the most part, there is a lot of drinking, less marijuana smoking (but still a significant amount), and a small amount of cocaine and ecstasy abuse, usually reserved for big party nights. Hallucinogenic mushrooms hit campus occasionally and are usually bought up by marijuana smokers seeking a more intense high. For a school that was famous during the '80s and '90s for having the best cocaine in the West, USC has tamed down considerably. Even coffee, cigarettes, and Ritalin, three staple drugs for fast-moving students all over the country, are not very popular at USC, probably due to the fact that people are more health conscious here than in most other places.

Drugs Is a Personal Choice

The opportunity to do drugs outside of campus is a personal choice. If you choose to do drugs, its up to you, but the school does not encourage it. They simply try to educate you.

Up to You

You don't openly see it on campus. You know where they are. It's up to you whether or not you want to go there.

Alcohol! Alcohol! Alcohol!

I often hear stories of girls who are drugged at frat parties and it seems like a common occurence at certain fraternity houses. When fraternities throw parties, most often the alcohol will be very cheap and limited. The police regulate parties on an alright level. Sometimes parties that get really crazy will be shut down by the police, but they very rarely do. There's campus security on our fraternity row (where a lot of the parties are) that ensures our safety, but does not regulate alcohol or drug safety at all. It's very easy to get alcohol at USC and I've heard that it's very easy to get marijiuana also. I don't know about other drugs though. When students do get caught on campus though, they are severely punished.
