Student Cohesiveness
As a transfer student coming from George Washington University, where I had already established my life, I found the University of Southern California (USC) to be very distant and unwelcoming. There did not seem to be any method to break into the already formed groups that were present at USC. Personally, I enjoy when a teacher assigns a project or two that involves groups so that you meet people you wouldn't normally meet. Not only does this present the opportunity to acquire an enhanced understanding of different cultures, but it also forms friendships and alliances. I arrived at USC assuming that I would be accepted into the "trojan family," but that was the opposite of my experience. There are, however, very united swarms of gender based groups that were extremely connected - sororities and fraternities. But, again, these were exclusive groups that were not overly friendly to individuals outside of their organization. Since greek life was such an integral part of the USC experience, I believe that something should be done to ameliorate that or create events that would unite students who opt out of joining a sorority or fraternity.
