Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since USC provides students with everything they need to manage their lives at college, new students usually don’t think to leave campus until their second semester. Students in the professional schools of Accounting, Business, Communication, and Cinema/Television have the best classroom facilities USC has to offer, while the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences classrooms are simple with desks and a chalkboard.

Varsity athletes have separate facilities for training and dining in Heritage Hall. Everything else on campus is pristine and newly renovated. The parking structures are nice but not big enough to accommodate the amount of cars on campus and they have no security cameras, but DPS patrols regularly.

There Is Always Something New

With frequent construction taking place on USC's campus, it is almost impossible to not have top of the line facilities. USC makes sure that it offers its students the best places to work out, study, eat, and lounge. While this is the case, many students will argue that the athletes get even better facilities, which is the only downside.

Very Helpful

If you are an eager student, USC will provide you with an array of resources. The writing center provides one on one help with graduate students and the library provides meetings with research specialists. The athletic center is great and full of equipment--they are also building an athlete gym to reduce the crowd at the regular gym. The aesthetics are beautiful; USC has been constantly updating the campus, including the student center, to be state of the art.

Student Cohesiveness

As a transfer student coming from George Washington University, where I had already established my life, I found the University of Southern California (USC) to be very distant and unwelcoming. There did not seem to be any method to break into the already formed groups that were present at USC. Personally, I enjoy when a teacher assigns a project or two that involves groups so that you meet people you wouldn't normally meet. Not only does this present the opportunity to acquire an enhanced understanding of different cultures, but it also forms friendships and alliances. I arrived at USC assuming that I would be accepted into the "trojan family," but that was the opposite of my experience. There are, however, very united swarms of gender based groups that were extremely connected - sororities and fraternities. But, again, these were exclusive groups that were not overly friendly to individuals outside of their organization. Since greek life was such an integral part of the USC experience, I believe that something should be done to ameliorate that or create events that would unite students who opt out of joining a sorority or fraternity.

Facts

Favorite Things To Do

Favorite activities range from movie screenings to Trojan football games at the Coliseum.

It’s more like, what is there not to do on campus? You will constantly find people working on projects together in classrooms across campus, practicing a music or theater piece, or meeting with one of hundreds of student groups. There are a lot of places to study or work on homework including the many benches and quiet, secluded spots all over campus. There are always a slew of sunbathers out working on their tans, and the Lyon Center is a great place to work out. Sporting events are very big at USC, with some sort of game taking place at least every weekend.

At night, there is always something going on somewhere on campus. McCarthy Quad is a constant site of concerts and other activities organized by the student government. The Cinema School has frequent activities and film festivals, along with several one-time screenings of big movies at the Norris Theater. The School of Theater puts on more than five plays a semester that are performed in theaters scattered around campus. USC is very proud of its Visions & Voices program in which renowned experts in the arts and humanities come to campus to broaden the horizons of students. Whatever you are looking for on campus, USC can accommodate.
