Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Everyone has fun at night. Many freshmen go out to the fraternity houses on their way to and from the 9-0, while others get together with neighbors and classmates to hang around campus. Stage and screen performances are always going on throughout campus, and Starbucks is open until midnight. House parties are popular on 30th Street and on Ellendale. The 29th St. Grill, known to Trojans as the 2-9, is a good place to sit and have drinks.

Fraternities and sororities hold invites, exchanges, and formals at venues around campus and all over Los Angeles County throughout the semester. Sunset Strip has one of the densest concentrations of bars and clubs on the planet, while Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and Manhattan are all popular destinations for party-goers. When all’s said and done, and the night has slapped you in the face like a fishtail, winding it down with some greasy Chano’s seems to be everyone’s preference. Denny’s is open super late, but expect snail service. If you’re craving on the Sunset Strip, head over to Mel’s Drive-In—it’s 24 hours and has free valet parking (tip not included).

The Row

The best place to party here at the University of Southern California is the Greek Row without a doubt. The Row is packed with fraternities that have open parties to all girls, and most guys if you are able to get on the list. There are day parties on the weekend, and you are always guaranteed a good time if you go on a Thursday. However, the nightlife in terms of bars and clubs in somewhat non existent, with only one bar close to campus. There are some in downtown LA, but not the college kid scene. You have to go to Hollywood if you're looking for a younger crowd at the clubs!

The Row

The Row is definitely the place to go for the crazier parties. That's where everyone's at Thursday-Sunday.

The 901 Club

The 9-0 is smaller and dingier than most LA nightclubs, but it seems to do the trick for USC students because there is always a line to get in. It is situated at one end of the Row, which gives it a prime location. The music is always good, but there is minimal room for dancing at peak hours. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best nights to go. There is no cover charge, and drinks are very inexpensive. Just remember to drink responsibly and don't wander home by yourself if you need to pass out—make sure you go with some friends.

29th St. Café (The 2-9)

The 2-9 is located on the opposite side of the Row from its evil twin, the 9-0. This venue is both a café and a bar with a mellow atmosphere. The inside is a bit crowded, but the porch area provides a nice, open place to relax and drink with friends. The food is good and the beer is always on tap—it's a good place to unwind after a long week.

Margarita Jones

Margarita Jones is hugely popular for a few nights out of the year. Sometimes the entire Greek community crashes the place and drinks until nothing seems to matter. Otherwise, this place is reserved for eating and drinking in small groups.

Saddle Ranch

Not only is this a place where students come at the end of the night to meet up, but they usually come back on Sunday mornings for brunch and to enjoy the all-you-can-drink Bloody Marys and mimosas for $9 on Sunday evenings.

Tom Bergin’s Tavern

Bergin’s is an Irish pub in west LA known for Guinness on tap and Irish Car Bombs all through the night. It is rarely crowded but always interesting and fun. If you get in good with the bartender, he might let you sign your own personal shamrock on the wall.

Traditions (Traddies)

Traditions is a good spot for older students and alumni to stop in for a drink in the early evenings. It is most popular on game days, when students can watch the game on the plasma screens set up around the bar. There are also several game tables set up around Traditions for an even better time.
