College Prowler Take
Everyone has fun at night. Many freshmen go out to the fraternity houses on their way to and from the 9-0, while others get together with neighbors and classmates to hang around campus. Stage and screen performances are always going on throughout campus, and Starbucks is open until midnight. House parties are popular on 30th Street and on Ellendale. The 29th St. Grill, known to Trojans as the 2-9, is a good place to sit and have drinks. Fraternities and sororities hold invites, exchanges, and formals at venues around campus and all over Los Angeles County throughout the semester. Sunset Strip has one of the densest concentrations of bars and clubs on the planet, while Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and Manhattan are all popular destinations for party-goers. When all’s said and done, and the night has slapped you in the face like a fishtail, winding it down with some greasy Chano’s seems to be everyone’s preference. Denny’s is open super late, but expect snail service. If you’re craving on the Sunset Strip, head over to Mel’s Drive-In—it’s 24 hours and has free valet parking (tip not included).

The 2-9 turns into a bar around 9ish, and when there are no parties on the Row, everyone goes to the 901 Club. |

There are all kinds of places to...
There are all kinds of places to party in LA. This is the entertainment capitol of the world. You’ll need an ID for places on Sunset Strip, but you’ll also have the chance to party with the most superficial and spoiled crowd in the world. You can find a great beach scene if you go for a drive. There are a lot of fun bars in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. |

On campus, there’s Traditions....
On campus, there’s Traditions. It’s a typical, small sports bar. At one end of the Row, there’s the 9-0, which is a filthy, disgusting hole in the wall filled with true alcoholics. If you go, I suggest Tuesday or Thursday, and don’t wear open-toed shoes. If you don’t go, you miss a true USC experience. |

The spot to be on a week night is the ‘9-0;’ it’s the 901 Club. It’s very crowded, very loud, and very fun. They will accept random forms of identification—student IDs, other people’s IDs, and library cards. Traditions, aka Traddie’s, is the on-campus bar. They recently got strict about IDs. The Row, or 28th Street, is always a must. It’s all the fraternities and sororities on one street. |

LA nightlife is out of control....
LA nightlife is out of control. It’s so much fun, but you have to have a good ID. You can’t get in anywhere unless you’re 21. Sunset Boulevard is the place to go for the clubs. It is very commonplace to see celebrities at any of those clubs. The favorite hangouts at night are the 9-0 and the 2-9, which is a bar/café where it’s a more chill atmosphere but still very social. |
Club Listings
Club Nokia features emerging music artists and cultural performances and has enough space to accommodate more than 2,000 people in one night. State-of-the-art equipment abounds in Club Nokia with interactive screens around the club depicting past and future events. Adjacent to the Nokia Theater, Club Nokia has hosted several big concerts following the Grammys and will feature more big headliners in the years to come.
The 9-0 is smaller and dingier than most LA nightclubs, but it seems to do the trick for USC students because there is always a line to get in. It is situated at one end of the Row, which gives it a prime location. The music is always good, but there is minimal room for dancing at peak hours. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best nights to go. There is no cover charge, and drinks are very inexpensive. Just remember to drink responsibly and don't wander home by yourself if you need to pass out—make sure you go with some friends. The 901 Club 2902 Figueroa St. Los Angeles (213) 749-0865
The famous LA Conga Room is now a part of the vibrant LA Live. Providing the same Latin cuisine and music, you can enjoy the new spacious club and dance the night away salsa-style. The Conga Room continues to be the best venue for top-name Latin, world, and alternative music.
Bar Listings
Bergin’s is an Irish pub in west LA known for Guinness on tap and Irish Car Bombs all through the night. It is rarely crowded but always interesting and fun. If you get in good with the bartender, he might let you sign your own personal shamrock on the wall.
Traditions is a good spot for older students and alumni to stop in for a drink in the early evenings. It is most popular on game days, when students can watch the game on the plasma screens set up around the bar. There are also several game tables set up around Traditions for an even better time. Traditions (Traddies) The Lot On campus (213) 740-1018
Not only is this a place where students come at the end of the night to meet up, but they usually come back on Sunday mornings for brunch and to enjoy the all-you-can-drink Bloody Marys and mimosas for $9 on Sunday evenings.
The 2-9 is located on the opposite side of the Row from its evil twin, the 9-0. This venue is both a café and a bar with a mellow atmosphere. The inside is a bit crowded, but the porch area provides a nice, open place to relax and drink with friends. The food is good and the beer is always on tap—it's a good place to unwind after a long week.
Margarita Jones is hugely popular for a few nights out of the year. Sometimes the entire Greek community crashes the place and drinks until nothing seems to matter. Otherwise, this place is reserved for eating and drinking in small groups. Margarita Jones 3760 S. Figueroa St. Los Angeles (213) 747-4400
