College Prowler Take
Off-campus housing not owned by the University can be nice, but the closer it is to campus, the higher the price. Small, sometimes rundown apartments are expensive, but they always seem to get filled. Nicer apartments get scooped up quickly. Safety is a key issue for apartments close to Figueroa between 27th and 32nd streets. The areas immediately northwest of campus are safe and clean with nice apartments to chose from. Further from campus is the Medici, a luxury apartment building in the heart of downtown, about two miles from campus. Apartments at the Medici are about the same as the more expensive places around campus, but the Medici is far nicer than anything surrounding USC. It offers a private park, workout facilities, tennis courts, and brand new apartments. The downside to living at the Medici is the distance to campus. Off-campus housing in the immediate area is preferred and can be decent for apartment shoppers who start their searches early and are willing to pay a bit more. You might even hear about some students who commute from Los Feliz and Westwood, mostly because they don’t have the same security issues as if they lived by USC. But, of course, they must also consider gas money, mileage, traffic, and USC parking costs.

Off-campus housing? Now that can...
Off-campus housing? Now that can be a real sticker. If you’re planning on going Greek, no worries. If you make friends with someone who will be having a roommate leave, no worries. If you are on your own, plan on staying around school for the first few days of spring break to line up housing for the next year. |

Off-campus housing is convenient. They are all, for the most part, a five-minute walk away, and there are shuttles that take students from apartments to USC. Many bike to make it faster. |

Off-campus housing is easy to get. The University will help you get it. They have really nice apartments for five blocks surrounding campus. |

If you’re in a sorority or fraternity, it’s a good idea to move into the house because it’s right off campus. There are some places that are right off campus, and there are some a little farther away that mostly older students live in. I definitely do recommend living on campus freshman year because the people who lived in apartments always said they wished they had gotten the dorm experience and were always coming over to hang out. |

There’s USC housing off campus...
There’s USC housing off campus which is convenient, and the cheapest off-campus housing is the Greek houses, but you have to be a member. There are tons of apartments and houses for rent in a five-block radius around campus. It’s not hard to find housing. All freshmen are guaranteed housing on campus for their first year, but after that, you pretty much need to live off campus. |
