Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing not owned by the University can be nice, but the closer it is to campus, the higher the price. Small, sometimes rundown apartments are expensive, but they always seem to get filled. Nicer apartments get scooped up quickly. Safety is a key issue for apartments close to Figueroa between 27th and 32nd streets. The areas immediately northwest of campus are safe and clean with nice apartments to chose from.

Further from campus is the Medici, a luxury apartment building in the heart of downtown, about two miles from campus. Apartments at the Medici are about the same as the more expensive places around campus, but the Medici is far nicer than anything surrounding USC. It offers a private park, workout facilities, tennis courts, and brand new apartments. The downside to living at the Medici is the distance to campus. Off-campus housing in the immediate area is preferred and can be decent for apartment shoppers who start their searches early and are willing to pay a bit more. You might even hear about some students who commute from Los Feliz and Westwood, mostly because they don’t have the same security issues as if they lived by USC. But, of course, they must also consider gas money, mileage, traffic, and USC parking costs.

Housing

It is dependent on many variables such as what year you are (more guarantees as a sophomore for university housing vs. seniors), if you want a single or have roommates, number of rooms you want, location, and price (my gripe). But it is LA, so you have the variety with the detriment of expensiveness. Then throw in studying abroad and things get a little more complicated. But I gave a B because USC students do try to help one another.

Get Your Wallets Out

There are a variety of off campus apartments that most students live in. They are close to campus, generally safe, and provide decent amenities (gym, laundry, etc.) however they are expensive! Be prepared to pay at least $1500 per month if you want your own room. I am sharing a room at $800/month at an older complex and considered it a deal. Houses a little farther form campus are way cheaper but are not worth it due to safety issues. It is not safe for individuals to be driving in these areas alone especially at late hours. USC is working on improving the safety in the areas but it is not worth the risk.
