Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Access to parking spaces varies among types of housing. Parking passes for on-campus lots are valuable commodities among students, and they often resort to camping out in front of the Parking Services office in order to better their chances of receiving passes on dates of issuance. There is a limited amount of parking available on campus, which creates problems for students who need a safe place to keep their cars. Street parking is scarce and risky in a city overpopulated with motorists and occasional thieves. Off-campus residents living in buildings with full lots are usually forced to park far from home. The Parking Center, two blocks east of campus, is usually the last available lot for students with a USC parking pass. Although the Parking Center is secure from thieves and vandals, traveling to and from the massive structure is time consuming and can be scary at night.

Parking anywhere in LA is expensive and usually inconvenient. Parking tickets are inevitable and can easily add up to hundreds of dollars over the course of a semester. Some Greek houses offer free parking to members, which is considered a major benefit to being in a fraternity or sorority, and certain apartments in the area guarantee spaces for tenants. Aside from the lucky few who can park where they live without any hassle, most students with the option to park feel lucky to have a space at all.

Hit and Miss

I had a parking permit for the parking structure in my dorm, but found that they oversold parking passes and frequently found myself searching for parking places for up to thirty minutes--especially from 11:30 to 2 parking is nearly impossible to find. As far as meters, there are a few one hour meters, which are nearly always full. A day pass is 8 dollars and overnight is 16, but be careful because public safety will give you a $50 ticket if you are one second late from moving your car.

Typical LA Parking

Parking at USC, just like everywhere else in LA, is pretty expensive.

Cars

A car is not needed for USC, especially if you love around it. A bike is a much better (and world conscious) option. There's so many students with cars that it can be frustrating trying to find parking, and not to even mention the traffic which accompanies the 110 freeway that goes into Downtown LA. However, a car IS needed if you want to explore LA. It's a big city, and there's a lot to see and experience from the valley to Santa Monica, to Hollywood and to Koreatown. There's so much to do in LA and a car is pretty much a necessity if you want to experience LA.
