Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation is such a necessity for taking advantage of Southern California, and students are highly opinionated on the subject. Public transportation is satisfactory for students looking to go downtown, but unreasonably time-consuming for travel to most of LA’s popular areas. The fact that many students don’t even know that a subway exists in LA is a testament to the school’s lack of interest in public transit. For the most part, USC is a car school. They are expensive to maintain, and traffic can be unforgiving during rush hour, but they are still considered to be the best way to get around. When traffic is not intense, students can get just about anywhere in LA in 20 minutes or less.

Transportation around campus is easy. Beach cruisers and mountain bikes are what people like to peddle around on, while surf-style skateboards and scooters are next in line. Campus Cruiser is the student driver service that operates through the night and is highly regarded as a safe and dependable way to get around in the dark. All in all, it’s easy to get around campus. Bikes can be purchased for $50–$150 in the University Village, and locks are about $20. The only students who complain about transportation are the ones who need to get off campus and don’t have access to cars.

USC to Downtown Is About It

USC offers transits from campus to places like LA Live on weekends and to Union Station on weekdays for free They also offer a campus cruiser that will take you within a 2 mile radius of the campus for free. LA city buses suck and are expensive, so getting further off campus is pretty hard to do unless you have a car.

Good Options for Transportation

Most would choose to take the Metro, and there are shuttles around campus and even a taxi service for students within a 2-mi radius of school. Paid forms of transportation are rather costly as per the LA style, of course.

Cars: You Don't Need Them

Everything you could possibly need is within 5 blocks of campus at USC. If you bring a car to school, you'll be really popular, because almost no one has one here. You'll use it now and then to go to the beach or to Hollywood, but the majority of the time your car will sit parked in the very expensive University lots. The school also has a free car service and there are buses and trains going everywhere around Los Angeles. A car is an unnecessary commodity.

Facts

Did You Know?

Cars are necessary for getting around LA. If you have access to a car, your own or a friend’s, the city is yours for the taking. If not, the public buses are accessible, as is the Metro (Subway). Public transportation is cheap, but due to the fact that LA is so spread out, you won’t get anywhere as quickly as you want to.
