College Prowler Take
Vast improvements have taken place in the last several years in regards to technology. Computers are accessible to students, and the network is speedy enough to satisfy those accustomed to DSL and cable networks. No matter how many computers are on campus, nothing beats having a computer of your own. Very few people come to Knoxville without one, and you will probably regret not having a personal computer when the labs are crowded or inconvenient. UT’s computer store, located in the UC, has just about every software application you will need, and most of the hardware you might need, as well. If computers have not been a big part of your life so far, you will be surprised how dependant you become. Downloading music and communicating with friends are only the tip of the iceberg. Many class-related needs can be fulfilled on a computer, and it is commonly a priority to set up your computer on UT’s network the day that you arrive.

The network is good, except for certain spots around campus. The labs in the library are always crowded, so it's good to have your own computer.

The computer network is great. Everyone on campus is hooked up with T1 connections. UT has a lot of computer labs, so you can usually find one with a free computer, but I recommend bringing your own. |

If you live in a dorm, I strongly suggest that you bring your own computer. My roommate and I both had ours, and it worked out great. There are labs all over the place, but you will use a computer so much that you will wish that you had one in your room. We have T1 Internet connections all over campus, and it is very fast. There were a couple of times when it shut down, but never for more than a day or two at a time. |

UT recently put new computers in all the labs. They are pretty well maintained and have most of the software you would need for classes. There is even a small lab in the cafeteria. |

If you have your own computer, I recommend bringing it, although our computer labs are very high- tech and up-to-date. There are certain times of day, and of the year, when they are packed, and you have to wait forever to get on a computer. It’s just more convenient to have your own PC. |
