Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that there is not a lot of pressure to do drugs at UT. For someone who wants drugs, however, they are not impossible to find. You will probably know people that do it, but they probably will never pressure you to do it. Most students agree that the people who choose to do drugs keep it to themselves and their close friends.

Marijuana is the number one cash crop in the state of Tennessee and is easily the cheapest and most readily available drug. A lot of drug users limit their use to marijuana alone and do not use any harder drugs. The harder drugs can be found throughout Knoxville, but are well hidden. You will probably not have many encounters with drugs other than marijuana. With drugs in general, it is easy to maintain your stance once it is made, and people will handle your decisions as an adult the majority of the time.

Drinking Is More Popular

It seems as though almost everyone drinks at UTK to some extent. Very frequently at football games, you'll see fraternity guys and sorority girls sneaking in airplane bottles, or there will be keg parties on game days. Every party I've attended has had alcohol, but the campus is supposed to be "dry". The only drugs I've seen dealt publicly have been Adderall and Marijuana. Adderall is definitely popular, but I've never been pressured into taking it.

Drinking Is Definitely Prominent

Drugs aren't really a problem, but drinking is a prominent activity on campus.

A Little Too Easy

For a school that wants to get off of the "Top Party Schools" list, it is far too easy for people to get high and drunk on campus. My suitemates kept alcohol in their rooms and went drinking fairly often. They were never punished for it as far as I know, despite UTK's "serious" talk of consequences and punishment. I hope that in the future, UTK does more than just talk and actually acts.
