Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If going Greek is something that interests you, going through rush is definitely something to consider. At the very least, you will meet people that you will see again and again throughout your college career. Through a Greek organization, you will be able to participate in philanthropies, parties, formals, and the many Greek events that happen throughout the year. If you choose not to do so, you will still have many opportunities at UT to keep you busy, and you will still be able to make many friends.

On paper, it may seem that the number of Greeks are relatively small, and they may not have that much impact on campus. As many students stated, most Greeks are very active and willing to participate in campus events. They, by no means, control everything, but the small percentage of Greeks at UT are very prominent and involved in many successful endeavors. Learn as much as you can about the individual chapters and Greek life in general. Talk with those who have chosen the Greek life, and ask plenty of questions. There is a lot you can do before going through rush to determine if it is for you.

School or Greek?

Being in a sorority at the University of Tennessee, I now understand what happens at college. I am one of the few who do not drink, therefor I have a different outlook on greek life than most. If you are a partier, then greek life is for you. But if not, then the social events just get in the way of studying. I view the greek life as a great way to meet new people and philanthropies are a great way to help others. But as for educational purposes, greek life does not help boost grades.

Greeks Are Everywhere

You can't go anywhere on campus without seeing one girl with her letters on, be it a T-shirt, hat, cup, anything. Most of the parties you'll go to in your freshman year are Greek-ran. There's definitely a strong Greek presence on campus, and rushing is pretty rewarding, if that's your kind of scene.

Social Acceptance Is Greek Life

There is a lot of emphasis on being part of a fraternity or sorority at University of Tennessee's Knoxville campus. If you want to have an active social life here, you will have a difficult time without joining one of these groups. Many people will not even date outside of brother/sister fraternity/sorority groups. This is not to say that people will treat you negatively in day to day life, but solid relationships are much less likely if you are not in the Greek life.
