University of Texas - Austin Academics had a new discussion posted by Stark123

Again, this is a relative question. I saw it done by A LOT of people, but they did work hard and they came in with >3.5 GPAs.

My GPA is a 3.71 and I'm in the Honors Program, would that do it?

As long as you have a strong application with well written essays to back it up. Also depends on which program you are trying to get into, I would go talk to an admissions counselor at UT

I myself am a Texan, personally I would advise you to not go to UT. I know a lot of people who go there and there is not much variety of people. I guess you could say it does have a specific stereotype from what ive seen there and based on the people I know who attend there.

1) Whoa, the guy above me is not giving you the right advice. I went there, and I loved it. I interacted with people from PA, CA, and throughout the world. I am from Texas, but I had friends from all around. Yes, 90% are from Texas, but those from out of state are actually automatically cooler and usually shown welcomed with "Southern Comfort". Kind of like "Here, let us show you why Texas is awesome."

2) UT does NOT have a stereotypical student. Actually you will not find that in Austin because Austin is "Weird". It's weird because there are so many different types of people there - jocks, nerds, laid back, etc. The one thing that you won't find in TX is the cut-throat environment that you are likely used to in the Northeast. There are SO MANY PEOPLE on campus, that you will inevitably find a group of people that have the same interests as you do.

Go to UT and apply yourself while there; you won't regret it. Message me if you have more questions.

University of Texas - Austin Campus Housing had a new discussion posted by mkm879

Hey mkm879, I lived on campus for three years - 2 at San Jacinto and 1 as a Resident Assistant in Jester West. First off, get a bike. Second, I don't think you're going to find a specific dorm with the most greeks. Dobie (an off-campus dorm that is pretty much on-campus) probably has the most Greeks.

If you're living in an on-campus dorm, I would try to be as far West on campus as you can possibly be since that will put you closest to West Campus where the Greek life predominantly is. So if you can afford it, Duren would be best. If you're a girl, you should go for Kinsolving. If you are an honors student, live in the honors dorms. You really can't go wrong living anywhere, but living in San Jacinto would mean that you have a solid 20 minute walk and would put you furthest away from West Campus.

Jester East and West has the most people and usually is the most social.

There are two sororities on campus (Alpha Phi and one other) and those are on the South side of campus. Other than that all Greek life is either in North campus or West Campus.

Send me a message if you have any other questions.

Most students agree that they have loved their time here at UT, and they wouldn't want to be anywhere else. College is the best time of your life, and I can't think of a better place to spend it than at the University of Texas. Students get a great education while having an awesome college town with everything at their disposals. Don't try to graduate early. Enjoy your time at UT-go cheer on the Longhorns at all the home games for all sports: football, basketball, baseball, intramurals. See the amenities that the Forty Acres has to offer-the Harry Ransom Center, go to our libraries and see our more than eight million volumes. Go to Gregory Gym and the Rec Center-you have a free gym membership for four years or more-use it.

I came to UT convinced that I was going to transfer to a school in California in the spring. I spent two days here before school started and I never wanted to leave, even to go home and visit my parents and high school friends! I couldn't leave because I was always afraid that I would miss something because there was always something exciting going on. If you are worried about the fact that UT is so big, don't. All you have to do is find your niche, and everything else should fall into place. You can find it within your dorm, apartment, organization, fraternity, sorority, or classmates. Although, at times, it may seem overwhelming, UT is not nearly as big as it sounds. All you have to do is make friends, which you will, and the campus will seem infinitely smaller. Come join us!
