There aren't too many good options as far as off campus housing within walking distance is concerned, however, the convenience of the extensive bus routes makes UT accessible within 10 minutes at the very least. There has been safety concerns, particularly the housing near west campus. The cost of living off campus is generally lower than that of living on campus unless you wish to live in the heart of down town and most landlords are very understanding and patient, particularly if you follow their expectations. The downside of living off campus is that it comes with the hastle of being legally bound to honoring leasing contracts, paying bills etc. and there is no guaranteed internet access unless it is included in the rental package. Parking within downtown is generally poor, however, apartments off campus generally have more parking space.
Areas that are particularly popular amongst college students are Far West, Arboretum, Riverside and Hyde Park.

I personally do not reside on campus, however, classmates and friends have given me their input on UT housing. It is my general understanding that the conditions are ok, however, they need updating. The campus wins points for being in a very prime location with access to downtown Austin, shopping, off campus entertainment and cuisine and an extensive bus route system. Students in the dorms also enjoy access to campus facilities such as the library, internet, gym and the health centre - living on campus is very convenient and for this reason primarily, is highly recommended to students.

Health & Safety:
Campus Safety – UT is generally a safe campus with regular security checks and quick access to law enforcement officers. However the size of the campus enables the presence of non students which, in the past, has led to campus shootings. UT is also known as a party school and the high consumption of alcohol amongst students on/around campus brings sexual assault and increased road accidents to the area. The major safety concern is around the campus location, students have been alerted about armed robberies and assaults around the campus on Guadalupe and other neighboring streets. With the above in mind, I generally feel safe around campus and have never experienced any crime personally.

Average Price – West Campus is a fairly mediocre place to find apartments/condos that you can rent with friends.

During the summer Texas is unbearable, but UT has a very nice indoor track and gym to alleviate some of the hazard of running in 100 degree plus weather. Winter's are normally mild and Spring is the best time of the year. The campus is comfortable year round.

Housing Off Campus – I like the surrounding area in Austin. Always things to do and everyone is very friendly. The North West side of town is paticularly nice.

I Don't Live on Campus – I don't live on campus but it appears that all of the facilities are well maintained by the school. I've never heard any complaints from those who do live in the dorms so I assume that they are more than adequate.

The Professors Rock – Being in the science field my professors that I have encountered really know their material. They are in it because of their love to teach and spread knowledge. The workload can be hectic because you are juggling the hardest classes on campus, but if you attend office hours, and develop a relationship with your professors and peers you will be fine.

You Can Do What You Want – It's a big party college, and everyone knows that, so the professors know that kids go out and party and have social lives. They can't control you and if you don't get your work done it's your fault. The professors will work with you though if you at least try. But public intoxication is a big problem and is taken serious with underage students.

Pretty Cheap Buffet – The dining hall I eat at most of the time is in my residence hall and it is a buffet. It is the cheapest place to eat and has good food, so it is always crowded around lunch and dinner time. By eating there I have saved a ton of dine in dollars, opposed to others.

The weather in Texas is a little wacky. It can be cold and rainy (30s) in the morning and hot in the evening (80s). However, overall the weather is great! If you like snow, Im sorry we have little to none. Nearly 85% of th time the weather is be sunny. Only downfall is it can get really hot in the summer (110s)

There are many computers avaible to the students. However if you cant make it to the campus it is good to have one with you.

Be Smart – If you know you are a loud obivious drunk then you might want to stay away from the alcohol. The policeman dont take underage drinking very lightly if you are caught staggering down the street they will stop you and give you a citation. If you live on campus and cant make it to your room without falling or vomiting, they will call the police on you. If you are going to drink have someone there (who isnt drunk) to take care of you and let you know when to stop. If you drink just be discreet and smart about it and you should be fine.

Im not into the party life. However you can find whatever you are looking for. Some clubs require you to be over 21 but there are many that you can get into if youre underage. Honestly the clubs aren't as fun if you aren't old enough to drink. So if you are underage and looking for a good time find some frat parties that are open to everyone or a house party.

There is always something going on. The problem isn't finding things to do but choosing what is more important. There are several hobos off-campus but as long as you dont walk alone everything should be fine.

I Love UT – This school is extremely difficult, but the experience itself is worth it. It is so diverse, which has opened my eyes to many new things. With so many places to go, eat, and explore, the excitement of Austin is never ending. I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
