If you come to Texas apathetic about sports, you are 1) crazy, and 2) missing out on some great games, fine athletes, and fun times. Buy a sports package—it gives you the opportunity to draw for tickets for all of the major varsity sports games. Football at Texas is huge, even when it's are not ranked, though this has not been the case, especially since we won the National Championship in 2006. Basketball fans are almost as rowdy and, in 2003, both men’s and women’s basketball made it to the Final 4. Our baseball team doesn’t gather as many fans as it should considering we won the College World Series in 2002 and regularly make it to Omaha for the final tournament. However, the boys at Disch-Falk do have their loyal following.
Especially under-appreciated are the swimming and diving teams, which are often Big 12 champs but never get the recognition they deserve, aside from a lighting of the Tower orange every year. Women’s rowing has also grown a lot in the past few years, and their team generally does pretty well. They also do not get the credit that they deserve. Intramurals are very popular within the Greek community, dorm communities, and campus organizations. Texas also has many club teams that do very well, including men’s rowing, men’s volleyball, and watersking. If you have time, you should check out one of the club team tournaments in addition to all of varsity teams’ games.
