Greek Life is not the focal point of this University's social life. However, going Greek is definitely a worthwhile choice to make. If you do choose to pledge, there are many benefits. Being Greek gives students a wonderful opportunity to meet people. Being in a fraternity or sorority allows students to make bonds that they will have for life. The Greek system also gives its members the opportunity to make great contacts that can help students both during and after college when looking for employment, as well as being a source for internships, references, and letters of recommendation. Just being Greek can give you an extra edge if whoever you are dealing with also cares about being Greek. The largest part of the Greek system is the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, which are the traditionally white fraternities and sororities. There are separate Greek councils for African American, Asian American and Latino fraternities and sororities, as well. As with most other facets at UT, there is something for everyone.

Being Greek is not a necessity, especially at UT. This is a huge campus with hundreds of organizations and clubs that one can become involved in, so the Greek system can be bypassed completely. If you want to meet more members of the opposite sex, and a higher ratio of attractive members of the opposite sex, the Greek system is the place to be. There are definitely people who do not fit into the Greek system, but if Greek life looks like fun to you, definitely rush, you won't regret it.
