Other stands include Groundhog Coffee Carts (21st & Speedway, Law School), Pato’s Tacos (East & West of RLM on 26th), Arturo’s II (Doty Fine Arts Center), Speedway Coffee Company (24th & Speedway, RLM), University Coffee Company (University and W. Dean Keeton, 23rd and San Jacinto, and Communications Plaza), and O’s to Go (24th and Speedway). In addition to these, there is Subway in the Law School, O’s Restaurant at 24th and Speedway, as well as the Dobie Food Court, which has many different options.

College Prowler Take

Overall, not many people love dorm food, especially on-campus dorm food. Some of the private dorms, such as SRD and Castilian, have pretty good food, but for the most part, Bevo Bucks are the best way to go because they can be used at so many places. The Union is a good bet with many different choices, and Wendy’s is open late, so you can “Eat Great, Even Late.” Jest’A Pizza is a good option. Even though dining hall food may not be your favorite, there is always something to eat because there are so many choices. Even as a vegetarian, there are always plenty of options—though you’ll never be on the Atkins diet because the vegetarian options are mostly carbs.

Students seem to agree that Kinsolving may have the best dining hall on campus. San Jacinto is the newest dorm and has a fairly good reputation for dorm food. Jester’s dining hall gets mixed reviews. A great way to make your on-campus dining experience the best that it can be is with Bevo Bucks. With your on-campus housing contract you are given $300 of Bevo Bucks, which can be used at many different restaurants on and around campus. So when you get sick of dorm food, your meal plan will still give you many other options.

Food on campus is okay. All I eat on campus is fast food from the Union and Dobie Mall (right across the street from campus). I don’t ever eat at the dining halls, so I don’t know much about them.

The Union has great fast food restaurants and delis. Just remember that Chick-fil-A is always closed on Sundays—it will save you some disappointment in the future if you go there just to ease your craving for chicken. Castilian dorm has great food and daily grill specials. They have birthday dinners every month and you get steak on your birthday month.

The food on campus is great and usually cheap. Good spots are Taco Bell and the eggroll cart on 21st Street by the South Mall. It’s heaven in styrofoam!

I eat at Taco Bell because they serve cheap food. When the other places on campus agree that cheap food is good, I will include them in my list of good spots.

Did You Know?

The Castilian (a private dorm one block off campus) rated Cordova Café the 3rd best cafeteria in Austin behind Luby’s and Furr’s a few years ago. Residents and non-residents with Bevo Bucks, who buy a meal plan, or who pay the per-meal rate, can enjoy the all-you-can-eat breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet 7 days a week.

You can use your Bevo Bucks at non-food places on campus, such as the UT Duplicating Service and the UT Learning Center.
