College Prowler Take
San Jacinto is the clear favorite of the on-campus dorms, and because it’s the newest, it is obvious why. However, almost everyone who applies for on-campus housing is going to put San Jacinto as his/her first choice. Obviously everyone can’t live there, so you will have to consider a few back-up choices. Jester is where a majority of people live, and most say it’s really not as bad as it seems. But if you do live in Jester, ask for the connecting bathrooms rather than the community bathrooms. Kinsolving and Littlefield are really not bad choices either for girls who do not want to go coed. There are several male single sex dorms as well, Moore-Hill probably being the most well known. However, coed dorms are a lot of fun and teach you a lot about the opposite sex. Some of my best friends are guys because of living in a coed dorm.
If you can afford to live in a private dorm, do it. Castilian is a very popular choice. It is coed, a place where you will meet tons of people and have the time of your life—a freshman year that everyone wishes to have. Some dorms have lame RAs who are more strict than others. Well, let me tell you that I knew all of the RAs at Castilian quite well, and they were all very, very cool. Having a good RA is one thing that can completely enhance your freshman year dorm experience. Many girls choose to live in Hardin House or SRD (you must know a Mason to get into SRD). The only downside to those two dorms is that they can be a little bit stuck up. However, if you are cool with that, or want to be around your sorority sisters, those are the places to be. Towers is more like apartment-style living, since you have a living room and small kitchen. But since you have so much room in your dorm room, you are not forced to go outside of it like you are in Castilian, so you do not meet as many people. There is generally a large Jewish population at Towers, but it attracts all kinds—Greeks and Non-Greeks, the studious to the stoners. Dobie is an off-campus dorm that is very popular with minorities and International students. It does not have a social dorm atmosphere. However, Dobie offers many different types of floor plans, so if you like to have a lot of choices, you might look into living there. Madison and Contessa are not as popular but are other options to check out.

Castilian has dorm competitions...
Castilian has dorm competitions where each floor compete against each other to win a trip to the Salt Lick. They also have parties like Casino Night and a bonfire party at a ranch. Most of the RAs are really great. Our RA played April Fool’s tricks on almost everyone on the hall. It was hysterical. Sometimes I think maybe I should have lived on campus to be more involved with the University . . . but then I remember I only had to share a bathroom with three other girls. |

For girls, if you live in a coed...
For girls, if you live in a coed setting, it is much easier to make guy friends. If you are living in an all-girls dorm, your main option for meeting guys is in a party atmosphere. That lends itself more to a dating or hooking up scenario rather than to a friend situation. It is harder to get to know guys on a friend level at parties. However, when you live with them in your dorm, you can make some great guy friends. This should actually work for guys making girl friends, as well. |

Jester is the ‘scary dorm,’ but it’s not that bad (if you don’t have a community bath). San Jacinto is really quiet. For private dorms, the Castilian rocks. Towers is cool, but definitely a party spot. Then you have some good all-girls dorms; SRD, and Hardin House—a.k.a. sorority central. |

Basically you want to live in an off-campus dorm. They are literally across the street from campus, so it’s like living on campus, but in a much, much nicer place. Try the Castilian, Dobie, or Towers. They actually don’t cost that much more than living on campus. |

Jester Center has a funky smell to it, but you get used to after a while. San Jacinto is the lap of luxury, but it’s more isolated. |
