College Prowler Take
Though the University of Texas is well equipped with lots of computer labs and many computers (both PCs and Macs), the number of students far outnumbers the number of computers. It really is best to bring your own computer if you are able to do so. But if you are not, there is usually a computer available in one of the many labs on campus. Some of the largest labs are in FAC 212 with 173 computers, the CBA with 245, and the PCL with 71 computers. The overall student consensus is that bringing your own computer is a great idea, and it is even better if you can bring a laptop. However, one thing you have to think about is that one of the great things about dorms is the networks and the availability of tons of music to download (not that I would ever “steal” or condone “stealing music”). If you have a laptop, you only have so much storage space, and this is where a desktop comes in handy. However, with CD burners, tons of storage space is really unnecessary. There is a wireless network available in most buildings on campus, so if you have a laptop you can be connected to the Internet even while you are in class. If you are in the business school, they will allow you to check out laptops and other equipment such as projectors, using your student ID. The Campus Computer Store, located in the FAC building next to the main tower, will allow students to purchase many types of software at very discounted prices, and this is very well worth checking out.

During popular hours, the computer labs are crowded and this can make it really difficult to find access to a decent computer. Most definitely bring your own laptop and you won't regret it.

Bring your own laptop. I guess it's not the end of the world if you can't get one, but so much correspondence relies on the professors' daily communication with the class that I would be very bothered to have to find access to a computer so frequently. The Wi-Fi is really fast, just really expensive as well. It is well worth it though, with all the studying that you will hopefully be doing.

I was fortunate enough to always have my own computer during college, and I used my friends’ printers when I needed to. |

I would bring my own computer just for the convenience of doing work at home. The labs are very good. There are times where they can be crowded, but there are several available all over campus. |

Bring a computer! It’s possible to survive without your own, but it saves you a lot of walking. Most computer labs are easily accessible on campus, and you can still print stuff out for a fee. My printer was out for a month, and I lived in the UGL lab. |
