College Prowler Take

The University of Texas has great facilities that should definitely be utilized while you are here. We have great equipment in our gym and Rec Center: machines, weights, a pool, volleyball courts, racquetball courts, an indoor track, and a climbing wall. A few blocks away from the University proper are the intramural fields, located at Guadalupe and 51st Streets, where students can play various sports (soccer, football, Frisbee). The Texas Union is a great place to study, relax, grab a bite to eat, watch TV, or make copies. The second floor chairs are a comfortable place to either hang out or take a quick nap.

The University of Texas has more than a dozen libraries, and permanent exhibits include the Gutenberg Bible and the world’s first photograph. The Benson is the largest collection of Latin American books in North America and they can be accessed by any UTA student. There is an Undergraduate Writing Center located on campus in the UGL where you can get help editing your papers and work on your writing skills free of charge. There are also career centers within every college, as well as the large career center in Jester. Also in Jester is the Jester Learning Center where you can receive walk-in tutoring in many subjects.

The Health Center on campus is very helpful. The Ford Career Center in the business school, if utilized, will help you with your future career decisions and questions.

The facilities are satisfactory,...

The facilities are satisfactory, but the better ones are usually in the business or computer science buildings. The plus to this is that you can use them even if your major is not one of those, but most people don’t know that. Athletics are really impressive here. We have a wonderful swim center and many great gyms.

One of the greatest resources is the Undergraduate Writing Center in the UGL. If you take a paper to them, they will check it for grammatical mistakes and meet with you on ways to improve your writing, which is always helpful. It also helps you not to procrastinate on papers. The Health Center is scary at best. Never go to a gynecologist at the Health Center, they will tell you that you are pregnant no matter what. Any doctor in the Health Center’s first question is always, ‘Are you pregnant?’ No matter your response, you are guilty until proven innocent. I’m sure they ask the boys if they are pregnant, as well! Nothing is more frustrating than going into the Health Center with a sinus infection and having them treat you like a harlot. You leave with a guilty conscience and condoms, even if you are a virgin.

I think that the facilities are average. They are definitely nice enough to get the job done. There are some newer buildings that are really nice. The athletic and recreational facilities are huge and well maintained.
