College Prowler Take
Greek Life is not the focal point of this University’s social life. However, going Greek is definitely a worthwhile choice to make. If you do choose to pledge, there are many benefits. Being Greek gives students a wonderful opportunity to meet people. Being in a fraternity or sorority allows students to make bonds that they will have for life. The Greek system also gives its members the opportunity to make great contacts that can help students both during and after college when looking for employment, as well as being a source for internships, references, and letters of recommendation. Just being Greek can give you an extra edge if whoever you are dealing with also cares about being Greek. The largest part of the Greek system is the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, which are the traditionally white fraternities and sororities. There are separate Greek councils for African American, Asian American and Latino fraternities and sororities, as well. As with most other facets at UT, there is something for everyone.
Being Greek is not a necessity, especially at UT. This is a huge campus with hundreds of organizations and clubs that one can become involved in, so the Greek system can be bypassed completely. If you want to meet more members of the opposite sex, and a higher ratio of attractive members of the opposite sex, the Greek system is the place to be. There are definitely people who do not fit into the Greek system, but if Greek life looks like fun to you, definitely rush, you won’t regret it.

Greek life is okay. It definitely doesn’t dominate the social scene. Most of the big parties are put on by fraternities, but there are thousands of other things to do. |

I completely recommend joining a fraternity or sorority. It is a great experience that gives you many opportunities to meet people on campus, get involved in service projects, have somewhere to belong, and always have something social going on. Greek organizations require their members to keep a certain GPA or to participate in study hours, so it can be good for your academics, as well. Being in a sorority is something I would never change, and if I were a guy, I would have joined a fraternity without question because your social life increases exponentially. |

The Greeks get a bad rep around campus, but honestly it’s the best way to go socially, as they have the best parties, and you can also make business ties for the future. Learn to play golf. |

Being Greek is a great way to make the University seem smaller. As a girl, the rush process is so rigorous that you bond with those around you, and when you pledge, you are suddenly united not only with those who wear your letters, but with all who wear letters, because we are a minority, and we stick together. |

I’m Greek, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t know what non-Greek people do on the weekends, but I bet it’s not as fun. There’s always something going on during on the weekends, and during the week, for that matter. |
