Best Place to Take Your ParentsCollege Prowler Take
Food in Austin is awesome! One of the best things about this town is the sheer number of restaurants, not to mention the quality of our restaurants. Austin is home to tons of great Mexican restaurants, and those are definitely student favorites. A favorite Austin pastime is Mexican food and a nice cold margarita . . . or just the margarita. Some of the best in town are found at Iron Cactus, Trudy’s, Nuevo Leon, El Arroyo and Baby Acapulco (Baby A’s). If you want to get really drunk, try the Purple at Baby A’s or the Cactus Juice at Iron Cactus (it is made with everclear), or the Mexican martinis at Trudys (there is a limit of two). Austin has every other type of food you can imagine from BBQ to Thai, Chinese to tapas, delis to vegetarian-only. There are so many places to try, and the students recommend Magnolia Café, Dirty’s, Texadelphia, Hula Hut and Freebird’s. The most popular things to do in Austin besides go to 6th Street, frat parties, or protest, is to go out to eat. So, get ready to gain your Freshman 15 here in Austin and find your new favorite restaurants.

Magnolia Café is my favorite. It’s 24/7, and the first time I went there was at 2 a.m. They were rockin’ out to the Fugees and Tupac. If your waiter or cook does not have tattoos or colored hair, something is wrong—but don’t be afraid, they’re all great! If you like exotic meats, or just plain good food, sucker your parents into taking you to Hudson’s on the Bend off 620 in the hills. They serve things like Rattlesnake Cakes, Ostrich, Lobster-stuffed Venison, and much more wild game. Texas Land & Cattle Co. has great steak for a more moderate budget. For Willie Nelson’s favorite Tex-Mex, head out to Rosie’s Taqueria on 71, just past 620. |

The restaurants off-campus are wonderful. My all-time favorite is the Oasis on the East shore of Lake Travis (by 2222 and 620). The food is good and the atmosphere is worth the sometimes-pricey menu. Freebirds off Red River serves cheap, great burritos. |

Austin restaurants have the best...
Austin restaurants have the best Tex-Mex food around—great food and great atmospheres! Don’t forget to share a Hulala at Hula Hut, or get a Mag Mud at Magnolia Café. |

It’s hit or miss with Chinese food along the Drag. Don’t forget that usually you get what you pay for with Mexican food. Tiff’s Treats are the reason for the Freshman 15: the most amazing cookies ever, and the delivery guys are all cute. They’re great for last-minute birthday gifts or study break. Plus, they can be sent anonymously! |
