College Prowler Take
Transportation is one of the things that Austin and the UT campus do pretty well. Students can ride the UT shuttle buses as well as Capital Metro routes free with their student IDs. There are several cab companies in Austin, and they are easy to reach by phone. They are generally very fast when you call them except for peak times—Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights when everyone wants to go downtown. At those times, there is a longer wait, and there are many people fighting over the same cabs downtown trying to leave bars at 2 a.m. When you are trying to get downtown or leave downtown, call a cab early to minimize your waiting time. The E-Bus is also a great option if the cabs are taking too long, and it is free. However, it only runs from 6th Street to West Campus and to Riverside. The downside to the UT shuttle buses is that you can sometimes wait for a long time for a bus, and if you don’t leave in enough time for your class, you could be late. This is particularly true with the West Campus bus—if you don’t time it just right, it could have been faster just to walk to class.

The campus has a great bus system for on and off campus. However, Austin is very congested and parking is a luxury at a big expense.

I still haven't figured out the bus system here honestly, but those who use it often say that it's not too bad. This city really depends on buses, so if you put enough time into figuring out where you need to go, then you will get there without a problem.

Buses are free for UT students, so that's good. Being from NY, where there is a subway system, makes you realize how much these buses suck, though.

It’s convenient but scary. You are risking your life on UT buses. I was riding the bus once, and the bus driver pulled over to Burger King, stopped the bus, and ran inside. Everyone on the bus was just sitting there looking at each other. A few times at the bus stop by my apartment, the bus just drove right by us . . . oops. |

Very easy. The UT shuttle goes all over town to areas of high concentration of college kids, plus you can use the Austin bus system, too. |
