Football is almost like religion in Texas, but that is not the case at UIW, even though it is one of the most popular sports on campus. However, adding a football team to UIW did increase the interest in sports and attendance at games. Most students will arrive early to a game for the tailgating parties, at which alcohol is sold, but only to those who are 21 or older. Still, students have a good time at these parties.

There are quite a few sports that are overlooked. Golf, tennis, and synchronized swimming, to name a few, hardly ever even make it into the school newspaper. Even though these sports are overlooked, the athletes on these teams still love what they do and do a good job of representing the school.

Intramurals are also available for those students who would like to play a sport but not at the varsity level. Participating in an intramural is a great way to stay in shape, get rid of stress, and even earn extra credit for your Dimensions of Wellness class. Many students who join intramurals were students who used to play on a team during high school and would like to get back into that sport.
