Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University of Utah joined the Pac-10 Conference in 2010, which made everyone excited for Utah athletics. As is the case at most universities, the most popular sport is football. Utah boasts the most wins in the very heated rivalry against nemesis BYU; every year, this game turns out the most people and is truly something to be a part of. Even though football dominates athletics at Utah, the U has one of the best gymnastics programs in the nation. The Red Rocks (or so the gymnastics team is called) are consistently national champions. Basketball has taken a real dive in recent years, but with the new conference meaning "better" teams will visit Utah, there will be an increase in fan attendance. Overall, with the Pac-10 Conference change, the athletic program will increase in talent and recruitment, giving Utah an edge over other schools in the area for years to come.

In terms of personal sports, there are plenty of club sports and intramural teams. The U also has a great selection of exercise and sports science classes (its yoga teachers are dynamite). For outdoor enthusiasts, the U’s campus recreation program rents out outdoor equipment to students who want to spend a weekend in the Uintas.

Football Gets the Most Support With Other Sports Coming in a Distant Second

At the U, football season is an awesome experience. It is so much fun to be a part of the MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section), which is one of the best student sections in the country. Now that Utah is a member of the Pac 12, the football team gets even more support. However, while the U has many other top-notch athletic programs, they are greatly overshadowed by the football team. It is difficult to obtain support for these other sports.

Utah Students LOVE Their Utes

Both staff and students adore the Utes football team, and football events are filled to the brim with energetic, excited students.

There is slight lack in regard to the other sports areas, though---baseball/basketball/cross country, etc.

School Spirit

Because it’s a commuter campus, the U doesn’t have a great deal of school pride. But for those involved with on-campus organizations, the pride swells dramatically. If you see people wearing U of U paraphernalia (hats, shirts, and the like), chances are they were given it for being a student senator or something. But this is typical of the state-school experience. Because of the U’s rivalry with BYU, which is owned by the LDS (Latter-day Saints) Church, many non-Mormons on campus equate pro-U sentiment with anti-Mormonism, and by the same token, many Mormon U students actually feel greater association with BYU than their own school. But you usually only see this the week preceding the BYU-Utah football game.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are getting harder and harder to get. The best bet is to sign up and become part of the MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section) and sit with all the other students. You get home game tickets all season for around $35.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Red Butte Garden, just a shuttle ride (or a determined walk) from the U. It’s got seasonal displays, peace and quiet, the Wasatch Mountains in its backyard, and it’s free with your student ID.

Did You Know? The mascot for the Utah "Utes" was, well, a Ute Indian, until it was decided you couldn't take a human culture and turn its stereotype into a sports icon. Then it became Swoop, the red-tailed hawk.
