School Spirit
Because it's a commuter campus, the U doesn't have a great deal of school pride. But for those involved with on-campus organizations, the pride swells dramatically. If you see people wearing U of U paraphernalia (hats, shirts, and the like), chances are they were given it for being a student senator or something. But this is typical of the state-school experience. Because of the U's rivalry with BYU, which is owned by the LDS (Latter-day Saints) Church, many non-Mormons on campus equate pro-U sentiment with anti-Mormonism, and by the same token, many Mormon U students actually feel greater association with BYU than their own school. But you usually only see this the week preceding the BYU-Utah football game.
Getting Tickets
Tickets are getting harder and harder to get. The best bet is to sign up and become part of the MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section) and sit with all the other students. You get home game tickets all season for around $35.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Red Butte Garden, just a shuttle ride (or a determined walk) from the U. It's got seasonal displays, peace and quiet, the Wasatch Mountains in its backyard, and it's free with your student ID.
Did You Know?
The mascot for the Utah "Utes" was, well, a Ute Indian, until it was decided you couldn't take a human culture and turn its stereotype into a sports icon. Then it became Swoop, the red-tailed hawk.
