College Prowler Take

Drugs are not a problem at the U, or at least, not a very large problem. Yes, if you’re looking for drugs, you’ll be able to find them, as with anywhere else in the United States, but the U population, particularly the Mormons, shy away from substance abuse. The administration has a zero-tolerance stance against alcohol, too, which annoys some, but they don’t throw you in jail for drinking on campus if you don’t annoy anyone or break anything. One of the reasons there aren’t lots of drugs at the U is the classic “commuter campus” syndrome. Because there simply isn’t much campus life, there’s just not much of an opportunity for drug buyers or sellers to come in contact with each other. This is less true, of course, for people living in the dorms, and much less true for anyone in the College of Fine Arts.

The most readily identifiable drug problem at the U is pharmaceutical theft—the University Hospital, just up the hill from the main University campus, has frequent problems with people stealing from its supply of drugs.

We have a dry campus. Having, using, or dealing drugs on campus is a crime. There are some who break this rule. And if you dig deeply, you can probably find them, but for the most part, it is not a huge problem.

I have never seen drugs on campus, and I have only heard of a few busts over the years. We have a dry campus, which the drinkers gripe about, but the non-drinkers love. I think the latter group is happy to not have to put up with drunken college men and women on campus.

I haven’t really seen much drug use on campus. It doesn’t appear to me that it is very common. However, I can’t say that I have many opportunities to be exposed to that scene, anyway.
