Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The U has some pretty good facilities. They are not the best in the nation, by any means, and there are quite a few buildings that could use a facelift (Orson Spencer Hall is probably the worst of the lot), but there are also quite a few that are brand-new or are currently being constructed. The University Hospital recently finished construction on a 10-year ordeal that added four new wings to the hospital and made it one of the nicest hospitals in the state. A new business building is in the works and will hopefully be completed by 2013. They are also working on a new microbiology building, as well.

In terms of recreational facilities, the gym is OK; it is very open and looks like they just converted an old warehouse into the field house. However, it does the trick, and it is always packed. There are multiple rooms for squash and racquetball—just don't forget your UCard or else you'll have to pay the $5 fee. The Babcock Theatre is a cozy environment to take in student-produced plays for cheap. The U also boasts a professional theater (Pioneer Theatre Company), the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and the nearby Red Butte Garden. One thing to note about the U’s facilities is the green space. The U has a firm commitment to keeping its campus green, with stretches of lawn that beautify and provide ample space to stretch and relax. The squirrels are often seen running from tree to tree, which adds to the environmental aspect of the campus, as well.

Mariott Library

There is so much that the Mariott Library offers to students. It has study spaces of all kinds, a cafe, and egronmically designed chairs. It is also open 24 hours a day during the last two weeks of any semester. They have a writing center that will review your papers for free. It is a great place to hangout and study.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

U of U is working on a project that helps conserve water and treat pollution, with two rain gardens designed to clean polluted storm water from nearby roadways and parking lots. There's also a Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund Program where each student pays $2.50 per semester and then every student is able to start a green project on campus.

Favorite Things To Do

Because of the "commuter campus" atmosphere, lots of people just come to school and leave right after class. Because of this, many organizations (especially student government) go out of their way to create opportunities for some kind of artificial campus life, including bringing bands to campus, free breakfasts, and Crimson Nights in the Union building—a free, late-night program in which the school schedules comedy shows, bowling, crafts, movies, and live music. Some athletic events are well attended, like women's gymnastics and men's football, and are very affordable if you join the MUSS (the student section).

Facilities at the U can scratch just about any recreational itch you have, from yoga to swimming to golf. The Union cafeteria is a popular place just to hang out for an hour or so on campus. There are cheap student performances for a wide variety of fine arts. There are also multiple museums on campus that provide cheap entertainment.
