Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Less than five percent of the University population belongs to the Greek system, and although Greek leadership makes regular, concerted efforts to recruit, there is little interest in the lifestyle. This is perhaps symptomatic of the West, where the Greek tradition is regionally much weaker than it is on the East Coast. The large population of Mormons has its own pseudo-Greek system, one which eschews the alcohol and, shall we say, “carousing” that typify Greek life. In many ways, this Greek life is more vibrant than the "classic" one. It’s only $15 per semester and not restricted to LDS members.

Although Mormons have their own “fraternities” and “sororities,” they are also active in classic Greek life. Sigma Chi, the largest fraternity on campus, is generally regarded as “the Mormon one” (although Mormons constitute only about 50 percent of the fraternity’s population). While Greeks have had strong ties to student government, and it’s been generally held that “to win you must have the Greek vote,” those ties have grown weaker every year. By and large, the majority of students looks down on Greeks (as opposed to other schools, where it’s the other way around), but the Greeks have a reasonably good relationship with the University administration.

They Aren't the Main Focus of the School

They're pretty active in recruiting people the first couple weeks of school and you always see them around campus, but they don't own the school, which is nice. The only time I really interact with them are at footballs games or if I have classes with friends in a sorority or frat.

Greek Perception

For the most part, Greeks on campus are perceived in a negative way. This is mostly due to their parties being cut too early and their lame attitude towards non-greeks. A lot of people who aren't greek see the greek life as more of a business. We don't need to pay for our friends.

Did You Know?

Some years ago, one of the fraternities on campus, Kappa Sigma, threw a party where police arrested more than 50 people for underage-drinking violations. This fraternity had a history of bending (or outright breaking) both University policy and the law. The dean of students, the Interfraternity Council president, and others called for blood, and this fraternity lost its charter. In the fall of 2005, however, the chapter was reinstated and recolonized.
