Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • ASUU: The abbreviated form for the Associated Students of the University of Utah, the student government
  • BYU: Brigham Young University is the other big university in Utah, and the U’s rival. It is privately owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Chrony: Abbreviated name for The Daily Utah Chronicle, the U’s award-winning student newspaper
  • Commuter campus: Virtually every qualifying statement about the U begins or ends with the phrase “because it’s a commuter campus.” Since so many students live off campus (sometimes in other cities) and drive or take public transport to school, it is a “commuter campus.”
  • Greek Row: The creatively named row of houses for fraternities and sororities along the north side of campus
  • Hookup card: ASUU produces a free card designed to help “hook you up” with deals and discounts throughout the Salt Lake Valley (more formally called the “student discount card”).
  • The MUSS: Student section of Rice-Eccles Stadium. The second verse of the U of U fight song includes the phrase “no other gang of college men dare meet us in a muss.” "Muss" is an archaic, early-20th-century term that means something like “brawl.” In 2002, one clever Chrony columnist made fun of what a ridiculous fight song the U has, focusing specifically on that silly “muss” term. In response, the U Football Fan Club printed up a huge sign which reads “The Muss” and put it up in the student section—where no other gang of college men dare meet us.
  • Parking Nazi: Derogatory term for parking enforcement. Dressed in red, white, and black, these jack-booted thugs patrol campus on bicycles and mercilessly and brutally hand out parking tickets like, well, Nazis.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Decide your major quickly—don’t waste time switching majors.
  • How easy it is to apply for the many scholarships available on campus
  • If you want a college experience, you have to get involved early.
  • There are plenty of better, less-crowded computer labs than the one in the Union.
  • You can get all of your general education classes done at Salt Lake Community College for much cheaper and then transfer to U of U.
  • You pay tons in fees every semester; the fewer hours you take per semester, the more semesters you’re here, and the more you pay in fees total.
  • Your student ID can get you discounts for all kinds of events and restaurants.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t waste money on the $120 U parking pass; go for the $60 E pass (and if you can avoid it, don’t waste money on parking at all).
  • Find classes that count for double credit (such as classes within your major that also apply to your gen eds).
  • Pick your major early and stick with it.
  • Sit close to the front of the class and participate in classroom discussions; because many classes are large, you won’t get noticed if you don’t try.
  • Take exercise and sports science classes for credit; they count as electives, they’re good for you, and generally you have little to no homework.
  • Visit your teacher during office hours to talk about assignments.

Nothing to Compare It to!

I can't answer this question, because I don't know what other campuses are really like! I can just say that I love the large size of my school. It means more opportunity. The social scene, from what I've heard isn't so great at my school.

Not a Super Social School.

I transferred from Utah State where all the students live on or close to campus and everyone has roommates and people love to socialize up there. The second I got to the U I noticed people are way more focused on school and studying. There isn't a lot of socializing outside of class for me and I have noticed it's harder to meet people when you don't live on campus or in apartments close to campus. I have spent a lot more time studying and focusing on school though, and I have been getting better grades so I don't really care.

Not My First Choice

Compared with other Utah schools, the University of Utah does not provide as good of a social scene for its students. The classes are okay, and it can feel like your professors are there to just get a paycheck.

Facts

Traditions
  • BYU-Utah Game: Nothing gets the crowds out more than a showdown between the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars. Because Provo is only 40 minutes away from Salt Lake City, it’s very easy for fans from both teams to attend games (football is the most popular in this regard, of course). The week preceding the game, expect a media bonanza, pranks, and lots of people wearing red (or blue, if they’re pro-BYU). Folks at BYU plastic wrap all the statues on campus so U students don’t come deface them (which we never do, anyway), and there’s an annual competition to see which school can raise the most cans of food for the hungry. The U always wins this competition.
  • Classic Greek Festival: Every fall, the theater department stages a dawn showing of a classic Greek play (typically “Oedipus the King”). It's a great show, if you don’t mind waking up before the crack of dawn.
  • Homecoming Week : If there’s a famine of campus traditions for most of the year, the U makes up for it during Homecoming Week with a Greek house decorating contest, a “3 club” golf tournament, Songfest (a panoply of musical numbers and skits, in which, typically, only Greeks participate), a pre-game barbecue, Young Alumni 5K Run/Walk, a bonfire/pep rally (which usually includes cameos by the football head coach and Swoop, the U mascot), and the Homecoming dance—typically for Greeks, LDSSA, and international students.
  • Olympic Legacy: The U has a nice Olympic Legacy Park just south of the stadium (where they let us keep the cauldron for the Olympic flame).
  • Red Fest: Every fall, the ASUU Presenter’s Office holds a week-long music festival, with local bands playing for students on campus during the day and bigger bands playing for ticketed viewers during the night. It’s one of the rare occasions during the year when U of U actually feels like a college!
