Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Despite Utah having a reputation as still living in the Prohibition Era, there are many places for locals to get an alcoholic beverage. The laws have just recently changed to allow anyone 21-and-up to enter a bar without having to pay a membership fee. Most bars tend to be full service, and the beverages are usually fairly priced. Overall, there are a few good nightclubs in Salt Lake City, but don't expect to be blown away by anything amazing. The club scene is growing in Salt Lake, but slowly. Most people you meet there are older and just want a place to get a drink.  However, there are clubs that cater to all sorts of dancing styles. There is even a "dry" club to appeal to the underage/Mormon scene.

Most of the students, or those that are underage, like to go to someone's house and chill or party there as opposed to going to a club. Needless to say, there is never a shortage of house parties to attend, which serve as a great way to get to know people and have a good time. The U of U also does a good job of promoting different activities and events that go on around campus. There are usually a lot of events that revolve around football, basketball, and winter sports. You just need to keep an eye out.

Great If You're 21 and Live Off the U's Dry Campus

There is virtually no nightlife on the University of Utah campus -- it is a dry campus. Greek Row (located off campus) has fun parties and it's great to join a sorority or fraternity if you're underage and looking for a good nightlife. Otherwise, expect some smuggled booze in the dorms or people quickly moving off campus because, even if you're twenty one, you can't have booze if you live on campus. Once you're twenty one and have your own place off campus, the bar scene is excellent.

Transportation

The university has a train system that can get you to most areas of the city and is clean and affordable. The system is free for students and is mostly efficient though it is definitely faster to drive.

On-Campus Activities Are Great!

There is always something going on that is available to all students attending the U. They are fun activities put together by students and it's usually a great atmosphere. If you're into the partying scene there are plenty of house parties near campus as well as a multitude of 18+ and 21+ clubs available downtown. There's always some form of fun going on!

Organization Parties

Organizational parties are not terribly big at the U. There's the annual pre-graduation house party, but it's kind of hard to realistically invite 28,000 people to a party, so mainly only the people who organize it and their friends go. The Union has started a program called Crimson Nights, held periodically throughout the semester. This late-night program features a variety of entertainment including comedy shows, bowling, crafts, movies, live music, and much more. And it's free!
