College Prowler Take
The University of Utah is a campus of contrasts. On the one hand, it’s cold, bureaucratic, and impersonal, but on the other hand, because it’s so large, there are no shortages of opportunities in which to distinguish yourself, groups to join, or people to meet. On the one hand, it’s a bleak commuter campus, but on the other hand, you have arguably the finest on-campus housing in the United States. You have the LDS Institute of Religion on the south side of campus and Greek Row on the north side of campus. You have a magnificent light rail system to get to school, and you have a harsh, brutal parking system if
you drive.
The trick to having a rich experience at the U is to get involved. If you live off campus and only come to school to “go to school,” then your good old college days will be very bland, indeed. There is no campus community; there simply isn’t. But there are dozens and dozens of sub-communities on campus to find and become a part of. People who enjoy the U are those who take ownership of their education and college experience. Those who complain about it are generally those who just sit back, waiting for someone else to make college great for them.
There is a very clear divide between Mormon and non-Mormon students. This can be difficult to overcome but easier for people from out of state. One of the reasons there’s less of a community feel on campus is the “us vs. them” attitude that some students and faculty take, which is really too bad.

The most important thing I can say...
The most important thing I can say about school is get involved! This is really a commuter school, and for the first two years, I just drove up to class, went home, didn’t make friends, and was miserable. Then, at the beginning of my junior year, I got involved, and now I have too much to make time for. The people are great, the classes are good, and there is so much to do, and more that I want to but can’t fit it in. It’s really a great school. |

Too Much Religious Influence from the State
B
Greek life is looked down upon and so under-appreciated that it hinders what fraternities and sororities could become. I'm currently in a fraternity and if I would not have joined I would be the most miserable person ever. The school needs to realize that fraternities aren't always like the stereotypical frat.

I think it was a fun school to go to. If it weren’t for the mountains, I would not have been very happy at this school. The education was decent, could have been better, but could have been worse, also. If you are a mountain person, this is the school for you. If you just want to go to college for the social scene or a superior education, go somewhere else. |

I have loved attending the U. I have gotten involved, lived on campus, as well as volunteering in the community. Everything I have wanted out of my college experience I have gotten here. It’s been great. |
