School Spirit at the U

School spirit at the University of Utah is pretty big. Students are proud of their school and let other people know about it but not in a pushy sort of way.

Marching Band

I must say that without the Utah Marching Band, I would be hating college life. The band allowed me to meet new people, play awesome music, and perform in front of thousands of screaming Utah fans! You get to go to all of the home football games, and sometimes travel with the team. Plus the director is possibly the greatest band instructor of all time. I HIGHLY recommend joining the band!

Geeky Interests

It was extremely easy for me to connect with a group of fellow geeks at the University of Utah. There's a niche group for everybody: from film buffs, to anime cosplayers, to video game junkies. It takes a little effort to find the geeks, but once you do, you'll always have something to talk about.

The university offers free public transportation for students. I used public transportation last semester and was completely satisfied with my decision. The transportation also stops at many of the cities hot spots and shopping centers.

Safety

Personally, I have never felt that my safety has been compromised at the University of Utah. Although, there was an e-mail that went out about some shady characters who have groped some women notifying us to keep our eyes peeled. I was grateful for the information and felt safer because of it.

Salt Lake City

University of Utah is Located in the heart of Salt Lake City. The surrounding area is filled with fun, unique dining experiences. SLC offers public transportation which is free for students and feels extremely safe. With a largely based LDS influence, SLC has many Mormon attractions such as their temple and visitor centers. There are many other cultural and artistic exhibits surrounding the university's campus.

On-Campus Activities Are Great!

There is always something going on that is available to all students attending the U. They are fun activities put together by students and it's usually a great atmosphere. If you're into the partying scene there are plenty of house parties near campus as well as a multitude of 18+ and 21+ clubs available downtown. There's always some form of fun going on!

Apartments Are Pretty Reasonable

There are many apartment complexs near to the campus. Many are very reasonably priced and comuting to the school from most of them is simple. The only thing that comes as an inconvenience is the parking... it can be a hassle to find a good parking spot.

Plenty of Options

Public transportation is paid for with tuition so I don't have to worry about driving myself there. There are lots of buses and shuttles near campus and plenty going to the campus from throughout the city.

The U offers two main areas for studying as well as for computer use. With either HPs or MACs, everyone has their needs met. Large screens with individual headsets, make studying in the library or at the Union a great way to do well in college. Printer access is available at a low fee to the students.

Salt Lake City Life

The University of Utah is located just east of Salt Lake City. There are several activities, restaurants, attractions and more that add a lot of variety to the campus life. With TRAX, public transportation system downtown and throughout the valley, it makes it very accessible and easy to get to. The atmosphere is very welcoming and encouraging for new things. It appeals to various groups and has something for everyone. The Gateway mall has several shops and businesses where you can do all your shopping, then grab a bite to eat before settling down to watch a movie at the theater or visit other planets at Clark's Planetarium.

Very Spirited

I personally am not a huge sports fan, but there are a lot of good opportunities to attend games and get involved. The MUSS (Mighty Utah Student Section) is a pretty big deal on campus and people make a lot of friends through that. The Utah-BYU rivalry is also intense, so if you are into a good rivalry, there will be heckling.

Music Rich Enviorment

The teachers are excellent. A lot of the teachers for private lessons are performers themselves. The composition teachers are encouraged to write all the time. There are some quite excellent and passionate teachers both performance and composition. They have some excellent TAs, although you do get an occasional TA that doesn't teach so well. There are a good number of practice rooms. If you come at the right time you usually can get a practice room. The practice rooms are a bit on the small side. They have a chamber, performance and recital halls, a studio and a few masterclass rooms. They have a piano in a piano in almost every room. There is a music library right in the building with excellent resources as well as there being resources in the main library on campus. As with any music program it takes a lot of time. There are a number of concerts going on all the time some student, some faculty, some professionals invited by the school. There are a number of regular masterclasses that go on, also. Overall, it is a music right enviorment

Diversity

Although there is much religious influence in the state, diversity is big at the U. Some people show too much skin in the summer in my opinion, maybe people that shouldn't be showing off their bodies, but You'll also see inked students, with dreads, as well as clean cute girls and guys. Love the diversity!

Terrible Staff. Avoid at all cost.

Don't expect the housing staff to be there to help students. They are rude, incompetent, and flat out dumb. (Except the student receptionists, they feel our pain too) I went in to try and make a housing payment a little more manageable for my financially challenged family (April housing payment is almost $1,000. Ridiculous. Find a much cooler house off campus for way cheaper.) Anyway, they suggested I just try and get out of my contract since there was only 3 weeks left, leaving out the fact there is a FOUR HUNDRED DOLLAR termination fee. So after going in to get help, my bill jumped to $1,400 dollars. Went in to sort it out and they blamed me, were rude and helpful. After I thought it was all sorted out and paid for my housing, they canceled my meal plan and i was unable to get back into my dorms. Took two days of living off of saltine crackers before they got their act together.

In short:

DO NOT DO THE DORMS. Not worth it at all. Rent a house for more freedom, no bad staff, and CHEAP

Very Expensive and Very Overrated

Greek life is overrated. You need to buy your friends and if you aren't in a fraternity or sorority they basically don't affiliate with you. It's not a big deal at my school because the Greek system does not run the school like the "greeks" would like it to. It is definitely growing but nothing special.
