Financial Aid at my school has not been too hard, and it is very helpful. Also, in order to get the financial aid you really have to stay on top of things.

That's the most important thing, and it's pretty easy and somewhat quick to fill out. One major thing: KEEP TABS ON SCHOLARSHIPS! There are many offered, especially with people who have dealt with or are currently experiencing adversity. The U offers a lot of scholarships and financial help. But remember to get started in JANUARY because the deadlines are often Feb 1st, or a little later in February.
