Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When a professor really enjoys an area of study, he or she will almost undoubtedly be an emphatic and effective teacher. Similarly, students eager to learn will be more successful when the material and the teacher excite and engage them. This appears to be the case at UVM, where both professors and students approach their jobs with enthusiasm and dedication. As a result, UVM students experience satisfying relationships with professors, enhancing their academic experience and the knowledge gained in the process.

The professors are primarily good-natured and sincere in their quest to share knowledge. Given that UVM is one of the lowest-paying universities in the country, most students feel these professors are not in it for the money. While teaching styles vary from individual to individual, most teach with a genuine passion. A laid-back attitude takes precedence over high-strung, fast-paced living. Professors here definitely possess personality, reflecting a variety of backgrounds resulting in many refreshing, unprecedented approaches to teaching. Some bring life experiences from far away, while others were reared right in New England. Most still take the time to learn your name, and on occasion, become your friend.

Couldn't Be Happier

The coursework is enough for you to learn without being stressed out and overworked. Most days I finish my work so early I can just hang out with friends for the rest of the day. Some of my friends aren't so lucky-- it all depends on what you major in. I am an Italian Studies major. Be sure to check on ratemyprofessors.com before choosing classes because it really helps. I have yet to have a professor I don't like.

So far so good! I am a junior and am enjoying this major. It is ALLOT of work...the clinicals are usually very good, as long as your clinical instructor is focused on teaching and not just having you do their grunt work.

My specific major is very intimate. Each student is considered and we exchange ideas and communicate as a group over growing teachers. Our professor has developed unique relationships with each one of the students involved in her classes. The students must be committed to the workload, 20-25 hours a week working in the Childcare Center. The readings are usually very interesting. There seems to be many job opportunities that will be available to us as young teachers after graduating from UVM.
