Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When a professor really enjoys an area of study, he or she will almost undoubtedly be an emphatic and effective teacher. Similarly, students eager to learn will be more successful when the material and the teacher excite and engage them. This appears to be the case at UVM, where both professors and students approach their jobs with enthusiasm and dedication. As a result, UVM students experience satisfying relationships with professors, enhancing their academic experience and the knowledge gained in the process.

The professors are primarily good-natured and sincere in their quest to share knowledge. Given that UVM is one of the lowest-paying universities in the country, most students feel these professors are not in it for the money. While teaching styles vary from individual to individual, most teach with a genuine passion. A laid-back attitude takes precedence over high-strung, fast-paced living. Professors here definitely possess personality, reflecting a variety of backgrounds resulting in many refreshing, unprecedented approaches to teaching. Some bring life experiences from far away, while others were reared right in New England. Most still take the time to learn your name, and on occasion, become your friend.

Academics

There are a variety of classes one can take that are very interesting. Of course, like at any other university, there are professors who are extremely knowledgeable and others who have no clue what they are doing. Overall the professors are helpful and there if one has concerns about his/her class. The workload isn't too overbearing. During exam week, the library gets very crowded and it is hard to find a quiet place to study.

Solid Program With Good Opportunity

Majoring in political science involves doing a lot of reading, particularly if you are aiming for high grades, and a fair amount of writing. The professors are for the most part experiences and interested in their subjects. The school provides many opportunities for internships with local government.

There Is a Mix of People Who Are Willing to Teach and Not

The psychology department is great and everybody there is always happy to help you. The faculty is friendly, but that doesn't mean you'll get what they are teaching. Outside the psychology department, it's hard to get a grasp of concepts such as math or philosophy and I had to get a tutor for math.
