College Prowler Take
The University of Vermont receives high marks from students as far as the quality and taste of food. It loses points for its overpriced food, unchanging menu, and noticeable lack of Kosher food (except during Passover). For more independent students, there are several cooking facilities in each dorm section. Unfortunately, this option is available only primarily to upperclassmen since all freshmen are required to have a meal plan. It is possible to do both with certain meal plans. UVM actually has fairly good dining hall food when compared with other schools. Taking the food for what it is—bulk-purchased, vitamin-enriched, mass-produced cuisine—it is actually pretty tolerable. Everyone will have his or her fair share of complaints, but overall, they do a fair job. An alternative to the crowded dining halls are a number of made-to-order areas that offer wraps, sandwiches, and a variety of other tasty treats. But don’t expect any deals—a box of cereal often costs five dollars and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will cost a dollar more than anywhere else. And remember, the food is not meant to be the best food you’ve ever had—it is there so you won’t starve. While it probably does not beat your mom’s home-cooking, UVM does have a better-than-average food program.

The Marché is a hot spot, but only...
The Marché is a hot spot, but only if you’re a big spender. The quality varies from day to day with those items that change, like at the vegetarian counter, where sometimes a delicious tofu stir-fry is offered, and other times a sub-par grilled vegetable and olive wrap. There is also the daily fried-food station serving chicken fingers, popcorn chicken, mozzarella sticks, that sort of thing. The dining halls are, well, dining halls. If that’s your choice, Simpson is decent. I personally would take a wrap from the wrap station at Billings over almost any other UVM food offering. Round Room sandwiches are good, too, but expensive. |

The food on campus is pretty good. A great place to eat is the Marché, which has everything from vegan entrees, to pizza, to gourmet, home-cooked meals, even groceries. It is most students’ favorite place to eat. Also, the Round Room and Cook Commons are great places near the academic buildings to grab lunch or between-class snacks. |

The food is decent, but not great....
The food is decent, but not great. This year, I used the carte blanche meal program, which I honestly wouldn’t recommend. This gives you unlimited blocks, which allows you to eat at any cafeteria meal as many times as you desire. I found that an all-points plan is more efficient. It allows you to eat anywhere on campus and even allows you to order pizza. |

I dig the food. The variety has really improved since I was a freshman—bringing a lot more á la carte options to different locations around campus. You gotta love all you can eat, though. Harris-Millis always has pasta, but the ambiance at Simpson dining hall is far superior. We have a lot of vegetarians and vegans here in Vermont, and they are acknowledged and provided for all over campus. Some recent developments have been huge hits, namely the Marché in the Living/Learning Complex, and the library’s Cyber Café. |
