Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Racial diversity is an area where most UVM students agree there is a need for improvement. In spite of this, many students comment on their awareness of the University’s diversity with respect to progressiveness and individual thought, as well as the strong presence of the gay community. It is important to remember that diversity is not limited to the color of someone's skin. Religious, sexual, political, and racial diversity are important to a diverse community. Unfortunately, while UVM may have three out of four, that is not good enough. However, the school is actively pursuing expanding the ethnic and racial diversity.

While UVM is very good at bringing together people with different ideas and unique thoughts, it simply does not have a large flow of minority students. But, overall, UVM does tend to fare better than the entire state of Vermont, which is one of the least diverse states in the nation. In addition, UVM’s students are notoriously open-minded and not sheltered. Increased racial diversity would expand these qualities, and improve the community as a whole.

What Diversity?

As expected, UVM does not have much diversity but the school does make an effort to make the students of color feel welcome. As a minority myself I do not feel out of place; everyone is welcoming. Of course, it would be nice to see more diversity here but Vermont isn't known for being a melting pot.

Burlington, its full of enthusiastic young life! Everyone is always looking to do something fun or interesting that you may have never done before. There are the most breathtaking views from almost anywhere in town, the food is fantastic, and its the perfect combination between a city and a rural area.

Facts

Gay Pride

Vermont was the first state to approve Civil Unions and is regarded as one of the most progressive and liberal states in the nation. Therefore, UVM is a tolerant place where people of all sexual orientations are accepted.

Political Activity

There is a strong political presence on UVM, whether cheering for an Obama victory downtown or protesting an on-campus speech by Newt Gingrich. UVM has College Democrats, College Republicans, and Socialist clubs. Also, an activist group called SLAP (Student Labor Action Project) fights for livable wages at UVM. So, while UVM gets a very liberal reputation, it is open to a number of differing political perspectives. After all, the city has a Progressive mayor and the state has a Socialist senator!

Economic Status

UVM students are generally from middle- to upper-class families. This fact has helped push rent higher and higher every year in Burlington, and the city itself is a rather expensive place to live.

Most Common Religions

While Christianity seems to be the most popular religion on Campus, Hillel, the SGA-recognized club on campus promoting the study of Judaism, also has a strong presence on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

ALANA (African, Latinos, Asian, and Native Americans)
