Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The people who join Greek life usually want to, so they are likely to enjoy it. And the 90 percent who do not belong to a Greek organization at UVM don’t miss a beat on anything happening. It is one of those things that most students agree on—it’s only there if you want it to be. There is no pressure to join a fraternity or sorority, and there is not a high demand for recruits, simply because the presence is not that large. If you want to be a frat boy or a sorority girl, you can, but there will not be as much focus or support as there may be at other universities. Regardless, pledging will allow you to become a member of the house, and, hopefully, make life-long friends.

But you don’t have to join to make life-long friends. Many bond with the people on their floor and stay in contact all four years and after graduation. Greek life does not dominate the social scene here, and unlike huge universities with a big Greek presence, you don’t need to join to do fun things or be accepted. In fact, there are many chapters that are not present at UVM, and the same opportunities are available to those who do not belong to any Greek house. Most people at UVM don’t belong to the Greek system, so join if you want to, and don’t sweat it if you don’t.

Greek Life

The Greek life at UVM is pretty tame. It does not have a huge effect on the social scene. Occasionally, we'll hear about a frat party going on but other than that Greek life does not rule the school. Of course, there are the obnoxious frat guys but they are easy to ignore. Not all fraternities and sororities have housing but the houses that are available for Greek life seem to look nice from the outside.

Greek life is interesting at uvm. Even though it is so small it still seems to dominate the party scene. Everyone asks me to take them with me to a frat party on the weekends etc
